We’re brewing a Dry-Hopped Barleywine-Style Ale. Avery’s founder, Adam Avery, was eager to brew this style and told us this story: Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine inspired him to try his hand at the style, leading to the creation of Hog Heaven, an Avery brewing classic. The idea behind this beer for Beer Camp Across the World is actually not to “collaborate” at all, but, rather, to brew the exact recipe for Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot and the exact recipe for Avery’s Hog Heaven and blend the two distinct finished beers together, and then bottle condition a new version of these two classic beers. The resulting brew is lovingly dubbed “Big Hog” or “HogFoot” depending on the brewer’s preference. It’s big, intense, and hoppy. Great fresh or the perfect candidate for aging down the line.

12oz bottle pours with a clear mahogany colored body that supports a thin light tan head of foam that leaves behind some spotty lacing. The aroma offers up pine hops, spicy black brewers licorice, malts, molasses and a bit of booze at the end of the draw. The taste delivers a pleasing blended richness that’s pine hop bitterness, a nice hit of earthy tea, spicy black licorice, smooth sweet malts, molasses and then malt sweetened crystal maltiness. Pretty damn nice.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a cream head. Grapefruit and malt aroma. Grapefruit and pine flavor with caramel. Medium bodied. Grapefruit and pine lingers with caramel and light cocoa.

12 oz bottle from the 2017 mix pack. Aroma is barleywiney--dark fruit, apple. Pours slightly hazy amber with a one finger beige head that falls fairly quick into a ring. Taste has a strong malt character--not too sweet--before quickly turning hoppy bitter. I haven’t had Hog Heaven in awhile, but this definitely has Bigfoot’s signature all over it. Unlike what seems like the majority of folks, I prefer Bigfoot fresh so I can fully appreciate the hops, and it’s no different here. Lots of malt character, but with a savage hoppy bitterness right there alongside to make sure things don’t get too cloying. About as good of a non-barrel aged barleywine as I could hope for. Good stuff.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a garnet color with a small creamy beige head. Faint caramel malt nose. First sip is bitter and warming. Hints of burnt sugar and crushed black peppercorns. Intensely bitter throughout with warming alcohol notes. Because this brew lacks the traditional sweet maltiness of a barleywine, it borders on crossing over to Double IPA status. At 90 IBUs, it’s very much a hop centric Barleywine.

Woody oak and caramel nose. Clear tea, medium yellow head, nice lace. Wood, orange, cherries, caramel. Full body, easy carbonation, slightly resinous. Rustic, sharp hop. Exemplary American style barleywine.

Bottle. Shared at the Beer Zen Salt Valley thing in Osaka, sold by Maruho. Orange copper with a giant beige head. Medium bodied, smooth and hoppy but nice with a decent depth of flavor.

Pour is a murky brown with a huge tan head. Aroma is plenty of crystal malt with some brown sugar and dark fruit. Flavor is dark fruit and molasses with a super bitter hop bite. Finish is super dry and leaves a almost graham cracked on the tongue. A well made American style barley wine. Plenty of dark malt flavor with equal parts hop bitterness.
