We’re brewing a Dry-Hopped Barleywine-Style Ale. Avery’s founder, Adam Avery, was eager to brew this style and told us this story: Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine inspired him to try his hand at the style, leading to the creation of Hog Heaven, an Avery brewing classic. The idea behind this beer for Beer Camp Across the World is actually not to “collaborate” at all, but, rather, to brew the exact recipe for Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot and the exact recipe for Avery’s Hog Heaven and blend the two distinct finished beers together, and then bottle condition a new version of these two classic beers. The resulting brew is lovingly dubbed “Big Hog” or “HogFoot” depending on the brewer’s preference. It’s big, intense, and hoppy. Great fresh or the perfect candidate for aging down the line.

Even for a barleywine, of which I am usually a fan of, this is pretty subdued. So bar the plum is my favorite. Beer camp.

Bottle from the box set, cellared for over a year. Very piny nose, some citrus, chocolate, caramel. Spicy and resinous. Clear orange-brown with a tall, fine, pretty head. Huge pine resin flavor, with alcohol burn and bitter hops. There is some treacly malt and a touch of chocolate, but mostly overwhelming resin and booze. Interesting but too much. Surprised the hops are still so huge after this long. Sweetness that others speak off is quite reduced, though.

Rich clear copper coloured body with a glowing amber, ruby and bronze tint along with a thick, two centimetre tall tan head on top. Aroma of pungent dry hopping aromas with some bitterness from alcohol, metal and a lot of caramelised malts - this really does show a lot of hops, in the nose at least and on the more bitter and pervasive side. Medium-bodied; Slightly thin mouthful with a big, heavy, obtrusive amount of bittered, herbal and very grassy hops with a penchant for alcohol and mettalic twangs along with a light citrus note show first and show very strong with some bitterness from malts later on, but no sugars, no fruits, no real body (surprisingly) and no real complexity - this is all about the heavy hands on the hops and the more peaty and alcohol/metallic malt flavours near the end. Aftertaste this shows more of an American Strong or just an overhopped and overbitter malt liqour with a high ABV, but no real complexity, no body or depth and no fruit or sweet flavours from syrup that you'd expect from this style! Overall, very disapointing given its from two brewers that typically find to have great products, but this is quite poor and shows much worse than a BigFootBarleyWine or a heavy, high abv Avery beer, which is quite sad. I'm just glad I didn't age this one for a long period in time, because it probably can't get too much better, aside from mellowing out the harshness from the hops a tiny bit. I sampled this stubby, twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Oaks (Fairfax), Virginia on 12-August-2017 for US$25,99/twelve pack, sampled at home in Washington only about eight months later on 31-March-2018.

12 oz. bottle, thank you TJ. (Sampled this blind) Clear amber color thin head. Aroma is pine, toffee, earthy soil. Flavor follows, bitterness leads me to believe it was an IPA. Ok, after a Blind testing It all makes sense now. Very pine forward!

bottle - Dark amber pour. It smells of caramel malt, hops, and some alcohol. The flavor has aggressive hops bitterness, very much an American style barley wine, with a solid malt backbone. It's a full bodied beer that finishes with lingering bitterness.

Hazy, light amber. A touch of floral hop on the nose with a signature slightly oxidized bigfooty malt note. Bitter, chewy and resinous. Has a floral hop aroma note. Not balanced...but chewy. Definitely recalls early Bigfoot.
