Alt beer or “old”beer is a Dusseldorf style, top fermented ale. This Alt beer benefits from a multi temperature mash, a procedure done in the old days to use high quality un-malted barley which helps unlock all the depths of the unique malt flavor. Alts re traditionally fermented at a cooler temperature with German ale yeast. Most of the beers of continental Europe resembled alt beer before the invention of Pilsner beer and today are hard to find except in the Dusseldorf area and by craft brewers. Dorsia was a special brew made for 3 Floyds “Reservations at Dorsia” Dinner to accompany Chef Pat Niebling’s menu. Prosit.

Tap at FFF. Hazy orange-brown body. Foamy off-white to beige head. Surprisingly, I get some butterscotch in this one, sort of off. Has an earthy, old time feel. Not the slick, perfect execution you’d expect from FFF. Drinkable enough, but soapy, and doesn’t have much malt depth. Not one I’d order again. Unimpressive.

Draft @ the 3 FFFs on 30 November, 2013. Amber or copper color with small lasting head. Nose is mostly caramel with some light Earthy, herbal type malt or hops. Flavor is malt dominant with light hops and very faint bitterness. The finish is a bit sweet and I feel it could use just a little bit more hops to cut down on the malt. Medium body and carbonation that gives a light creaminess. The style seems to be dying out a bit except in Germany, so it’s cool to see an American brewery trying to keep it alive.

Enjoyed on tap at 3 Floyd's. Appearance is a clear amber with no head, kind of like cough syrup. Aroma is a bit syrupy, not much there. Taste is decent, has a crisp finish but also syrupy, very faint dark fruit, but mostly malt. Not bad.
