  Lager - Pilsener Regular
Score
7.13
ABV: 5.0% IBU: 25 Ticks: 22
A modern take on a classic American Pilsner, brewed with Pilsner malt and a small percentage of flaked rice for a light body and malt character. Hopped exclusively with Amarillo hops from throughout the boil and then dry-hopped with Amarillo as well for a tropical, peachy aroma and medium bitterness.

In 2015, this was Gibsons B Pilsner. Name change to Amarillo Pilsner in 2016.

The biggest event of 2019? Amarillo Pilsner in cans!
Light blond colour with some chill haze. Very good malt and hop aroma, crackers and grass. Dry, lean, chewy mouthfeel; very good, crisp malt flavour; quite good grassy hopping too.
A very good batch.

2018-10-17, bottle from High Point, Vancouver, 7-5-7-3-14=36
I gave it a 3rd chance this year, the first two were fresh and purchased at The Gull, this one is now 3 months old and sourced at High Point, so at least not the same box that may have been sitting in the a warm place. Still, this year's batch is not convincing, it lacks the crackery malt qualities that we were used to, and the hop is harsh, lightly vegetable and herbaceous, not grassy.
Still a good beer, not a champion though.

2018-03-19, bottle 7+ months old, 8-5-8-4-17=42
The aroma is still grassy, very nice, maybe less poerful. The malt flavor is still prominent, bready, the bitterness level is ok, and some herbaceous hop resins show up.
I would still take this one above most Pilsners out there.

2018-02-23, bottle about 6 months old, 8-5-8-3-15=39
Beautiful look; the aroma initially is very nice, grassy (8.5), just getting milder later; the body seems thin, there are some crisp malt qualities and grassy hop, but not like in the best days (mostly lost in the hops), and it has a tiny trace of cardboard.
Just an experiment for one of the greatest beers of BC; it was holding up very well for at least 4 months, now it's declining, I would say, 70% of its potential, still very good to drink.

2017-09-06, draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver, 8-4-8-4-16=40
Tasted side to side with another Pilsner (Steel & Oak Simple Things), the mild fruity character of this one is more evident, elegant, subtle, with delicate biscuity malt notes, more sweetness, and hints of melon in the final. Almost unrecognizable. Very good of course.

2017-01-06, bottle, about 6 months old, 8-4-8-4-17=41
Last bottle for the season, still very lively and smooth; still lovely crackery and crisp malt, and still some zesty hops. Balanced and still holding up quite nicely.
Wonderful.

2016-08-05, draught at 12 Kings, 420+420ml, 7-4-8-5-16=40
Compared to the glass at St Augustine's, this one doesn't hide the malt so much and it has better balance between hop and malt.
Compared to the bottle, it has less carbonation (I prefer the bottle), and still not all of that malt goodness.
But it's a great beer anyway. And there is some aroma of sunstruck straws.
Light, refreshing, dry, soft.

2016-08-01, draught at St. Augustine's, Vancouver, as Amarillo Pilsner, 414+414ml, 7-4-8-5-17=41
Hazy pale blond with green hue. Compared to the bottle, the aroma is milder, but more piney and resinous; the flavor is more herbaceous and grassy; on tap, the hop is more evident and the malt quality a bit less evident. It makes me think of a modern IPA.
A different but still excellent beer.

2016.07.30, bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver, 8-4-9-5-17==43
Hazy, pale blond color, with fine perlage and compact head. The aroma is mild, with American resiny hops, crackery malts and summer grass fields; elegant. Off-dry mouthfeel, smooth; the malt flavor is extremely crisp, lean, potent, it perfectly balances the strong hopping, that provides plenty of resins, with orange zest and piney character.
Another Pilsner masterpiece by Persephone.

2015-07-25, bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver, as Gibsons "B" Pilsner, 9-4-8-5-17=43
Hazy blond color, pale shade, with fine perlage, medium sized compact head, perfect persistence for a Pilsner, I just wish I had a Pilsner glass for once. Elegant aroma, there is grass and some citrus peel, dry hay, sunny, very interesting and unique; after some time, it just keeps developing and delivering more aromas of summer fields. Good structure; dry mouthfeel; very good malt flavor, crisp, a bit bready and cereally; strong bitterness; the final is herbaceous, with hints of chamomile and piney resins, cedar peel, infinitesimal incense.
Excellent Pilsner, atypical maybe, but excellent.
I'm going down to the shop and buy some more.

It pains me to have to downgrade this beer, and so far. First, they dropped some batches with diacetyl. Now, it's just a sort of thin and vaguely dry pilsner. It's nothing what it used to be. I guess that brewer has left the company because what you drink today... I mean this used to be the best beer in BC. It's not in the top 100 now. Amarillo Pilsner. Hazy flaxen colour. Medium bubbly head. Big lemon verbena nose with bready pale malts. Very appetizing. Rich, citrusy bitterness, exceptional clean pale malts. Just perfect balance. Long, hoppy, lemony finish. This might actually be better than last year. Goddamn. 9 4 9 5 17 4.4 Gibsons B Pilsner: Bottle, Legacy. Hazy and pale with a big head. The aroma is herbaceous, big hops and clean pale malt. Very herbal, fairly dry but with a touch more sweet pale malt than the Keller Pils. Really nice. Drinks so beautifully - bit of minerals, lots of hops, brilliant balance. Another smash hit from BC’s lager gods. 8-4-9-5-17 = 4.3
