On tap at Bret. Hazy amber colour, thin white head. Aroma of sweet malts, honey, oak, bubblegum. Flavour is sweet, malty, syrup, oak, wood, alcohol, bubblegum, bitter finish that feels disconnected from the beer overall. Medium bodied. Not worth the whopping €5 I paid for a glass.

One of Gulpener’s recent collabs with smaller breweries, in this case the Belgian BOM Brewery, who supplied their own baked malts; apparently aged on roasted wood as well. Draught at Arendsnest. Snow white, moussy, cobweb-lacing, stable head over a hazy bronze-tinged amber beer with peachy edges. Aroma of peach, pear peel, soggy old bread, caramel, banana, toast, dry soil, ginger powder, hay, bubblegum, roasted wood remains all but unnoticeable, at least at the low temperature at which it was served. Sweetish, estery onset, peach, lots of red apple, touch banana ester, medium carbo, fluffy mouthfeel; caramelly and bready malt body, sweetish with a very subtly bitterish toasted edge, mildly spicy finish with again only a very faint touch of wood, phenolic, bit earthy, with a hayish, softly bittering hop character. Quite a plain and simple Belgian-style ale actually, could do with a lot more of the roasted wood character I was hoping for - just like that other recent collab, Jolly Roger with Uiltje, could do with considerably more hops and spice. Gulpener clearly stays on the safe side even with the input of smaller, more creative microbreweries - a missed opportunity to connect with modern day craft beer trends even - or especially - within the Netherlands.

Bottle from AH XL @ home. Amber colour woth a medium sized offwhite head. Smells malts, sweet, maybe some herbs. Tastes sweet mostly, malty. Quite a boring and dissappointing beer. Medium body, soft carbo.
