The shack at Windansea beach is an iconic part of the San Diego landscape, almost as much as the fiercely guarded waves that break upon its shores. Every so often a winter storm washes the shack away, but like clockwork, a salty-haired local hero resurrects it. It’s tradition, and Windansea Wheat is a beer created with this tradition in mind. Brewed true to the Bavarian style, this beer is served hazy and unfiltered. A closely guarded strain of Hefeweizen yeast creates that unmistakable aroma of banana, clove, and a hint of vanilla. At Windansea beach, you may not find many friendly faces out in the water if you haven’t paid your dues. But this Windansea Wheat’s got your name on it.

Draught @ Karl Strauss, La Jolla. Aroma has citrus and yeasty tones. Flavour has citrus, hefe-yeast, some fruits and mild flour. A clean, straightforward citrus-hefe.

~16 oz draft at California Adventure in Anaheim, California. The pour is a cloudy white yellow with a smallish white head. The aroma is grain wheat, light citrus, and a fair amount of clove banana yeast. The taste is a nice balance between the grain wheat, the zest of the lemon and finishes with the Hefe yeast notes. Decently clean flavors. The palate is medium to light bodied, pleasantly unfiltered mouth feel and clove banana and earth wheat in the finish. Hit the spot.

Hazy golden coloured body with a thick, dense white head. Aroma of pale malt, wheat, coriander seed, curacao and a very fresh yeast note - a touch of sugars too. Light to Meidum-bodied; Creamy, wheatie flavour with a good dose of light spices that leave the mouth very fresh. Aftertaste shows a little alcohol, a little fruit and a nice pungent yeast note. Overall, a respectable german hef with some nice yeast and wheat flavours, but the cool refreshing spice flavour is definitely still noticeable. I sampled this pint on draught at the LAX Terminal 7 location in Los Angeles, California on 23-June-2010.

Location: On tap at the The Fish Market in San Diego, 1/5/10
Aroma: Banana, clove, wheat, orange
Appearance: Hazy yellow color
Flavor: German wheat flavor, with banana and spice
Palate: Light-medium, crisp, refreshing
Overall Impression: My first (of 4 from last week) Karl Strauss rating. It was a solid beer, nice outdoor refresher, and that works well in a locale where you can pretty much always sit outside and drink. Fairly typical German style hefe, nice flavors, but nothing super exciting.
