Our 8th beer in our 'Nakama', or 'Friendship' series (also our 50th batch): The Craft Beer Market chain of restaurants has been a runaway success, and as luck would have it the first year anniversary of their fifth location, Jinbocho Terrace, nearly aligns with ours. Thanks in large part to owner Tanaka-san and manager Yashiro-san, the Jinbocho location has been a big supporter of Kyoto Brewing Co. from the beginning, eventually becoming one of our earliest dedicated taps in Tokyo. It was difficult to say no when they approached us about brewing a commemorative beer for the Terrace location...the hard part was figuring out what to brew!
We knew that Yashiro-san was a big fan of Saison and had a soft spot for our Ichigo Ichie, so it seemed natural that this become the foundation for this collaboration brew. To "spice" things up a bit, she suggested using fruit, hoping to craft a brew that would be a perfect match for drinking away a lazy afternoon on their outdoor terrace. After considering several options, we decided on a mixture of two in season Japanese citrus fruits: Natsumikan and Karamandarin. The result is a delicate fruit beer with a refreshing citrus character without being overly fruity.

Tap at CBM Jimbocho Terrace who they made the beer for. Good stuff. Fruitiness is quite subtle, but nice. Citrus, orange. Saison type qualities. Light creaminess, dry and grainy. Very good for this terrace. Light and refreshing.

Hazy, has some bubblegum phenol but light, fruity, low bitterness. Seems not that interesting.

very cloudy, big fruity, citrusy nose that is modestly tart. The mouth is light citrusy with big yeasty character. Big fruity finish. The citrusy character just lingers. Love the tartness, so well integrated. Fantastic if you like fruit beers

Kyoto Brewing San San 5.4% A glowing thick gold with a honey and citrus aroma, kind of like smelling fruit leaves and all. Tart Kalimantan and wheaty soda bread with a zesty carbonation and a dry finish. Somewhat seltzer like but tasty. Needs a bit more fruit/sweetness to take it to the next level.

Tap at Takumiya. Pale gold, cloudy, with lace. Nose is orange, coriander, biscuit. Spicy, fruity flavor, sweet malts, biscuits, not much hopping. Crisp, good body, with a decent peppery finish, but too spicy and sweet and reminds me of so many American saisons that I don’t like that much.

Tap at CBM Terrace. Glowing straw with a finger of foam. Juicy, citrus nose with nice a nice Belgian saison yeast character. Citrusy, yuzu like notes on the palate with some perceived wheat character. Nice dry and fruity finish. Really nice take on a fruit saison.
