AB:21 is a liquorice and blackcurrant infused imperial stout. Rolling in at an imposing 12% ABV, this huge and decadent dark beer dials down the charred roastiness and focuses instead on the rich, full-bodied chocolate and dark fruit character of the style.

The addition of blackcurrant enhances the dark fruit aspect of our latest concept beer, while the liquorice brings flavours of aniseed and treacle. A brandy-like warmth replaces roast malt as the backbone of this complex brew.

375ml bottle from the Brewdog Online Shop. This is one that will probably age well. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aromas of alcohol, dark berries, liquorice. Taste is more of the same, with some roasted bitterness. Think this needs a bit of time to come together.

Sample at Borefts 2016. Poured a clear dark brown with a bubbly round tan head. The aroma is liqourice aniseed. The flavour is alcohol liqourice and more liqourice. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Not for me at all. We actually drain poured this.

Bottleshare at Leighton’s Gaff. Thanks to Fergoose. Also Borefts VIII Day 1 on Keg. Clear reddish amber beer, good pale tan head. Soft palate, decent fine carbonation though. Soft malts, some caramel and cream. Light licorice blends quite well with the mildly tart blackberry. Touches of red wine and esters. Mild spice. Quite a light finish. Interesting and pretty quaffable for it’s abv.

Abstrakt 01 - 25 Vertical @ Brewdog Sheps Bush. Clear deep brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and fairly light, and has modest fine carbonation. Tangy thin dark fruits. Dark chocolate and tangy fruits, fair bit of spice. Light dry crispy finish. Not bad. Will last while yet.3.5

Bottle shared in London - thanks to Fergus. Pours clear amber-red with a thin, creamy tan head. Lots of anise seed n the nose, hints of dried berries, bread. Medium to big sweet flavour with some syrupy sugars, more licorice, a little earthy bitterness, leathery berries. Full bodied, oily and chewy, with fine carbonation, warming finish with more licorice, toasted bread, alcohol, toasted wood, faint caramel and vanilla. Novelty stuff. Drinks pretty good for the ABV.

Bottle split at Bespin, thanks to Fergus, 08/12/16. Reddish amber with a decent beige covering. Nose is tangy red berry, fruit loaf, raspberry, spice, aniseed, liqourice. Taste comprises candied fruit peel, spice, fennel, liquorice, spice, toffee, fruit loaf, aniseed. Full bodied, fine carbonation, light warming alcohol in the close. Ok impy .... came over more as an American strong ... not one I’d rush back for.

Bottle @ home. Blue currant is definitely noticable in taste and smell. Gives it a nice fruityness. Besides that it’s roasty, deep, slightly alcoholic. Also warms the chest a quite bit. But this is the first and only beer of tonight so that might give it a bit more of a kick too.

Good yellow-tan head, stable, over virtually black beer with a red sheen. Sweetish nose, faintly fruity, bit woody. Aniseed aroma. Liquorice, aniseed, mint, roasted flavours. Little or nothing from the fruit, except maybe backthroat, a faint (dark) fruitimpression, and a fleeting sourishness. Liquorice keeps hanging around, dominating the taste and aftertaste. Good carbonation, quite slick, medium to well-bodied. An experiment, we’ll say.
