Old rating from 20-07-15 - From the tap, it pours a deep black colour with a brown head. The aroma is of chocolate & coffee. Tastes of roasted nuts, caramel and toffee. Mouth feels is pleasant with very little carbonation. Just what I was looking for at this part of the evening.

Bottled. Deep brown colour with a small beigeish brown head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is coffee, burnt sugar, roasted malts, caramel and some slight syrupy notes as well. Flavour is quite similar, in a rather sweet way, but there is also some slight smoked wooden notes to take away a bit of the sweet edge. Easy to drink.

On tap at Bellavista, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a reddish tinge and a medium beige head. Aroma brings out toasted nuts, with light toasted bready caramel. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted malt, a touch of toasted nuttiness, and a tiny hint of caramel. Clean and easy to drink, but not a whole lot of depth. Solid stuff.

500ml bottle, labelled as Klášter Original Tmavé, ABV is 4.1%. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is coffee, maple syrup, caramel. Taste is caramel, roasted malts. Initially I got some unpleasant metallic hints, but after a while they were hardly noticeable. Slightly bitter after taste.

I bought this because it was a buck ninety for a 500ml - I figured, even if it’s bad, who cares? - it’s 1.90 - anyway, this really is much better than the ratings suggest - pours a dark amber, with a moderate lace - aroma of cherries, nuts, treacle, pastry dough, bread pudding - the flavor isn’t a sweet, and actually has a tiny bit of tartness to it - a lot of doughy character in the flavor, with cane sugar in the background, cherries, raisins, figs, nutty character - a touch of hops - lingering clean sweetness in the finish - fairly flavorful (but surprisingly sweet) for the abv - like a toned down assam bock - it’s pretty good - actually, for the price, it’s damn good.

Ahh, yes. Malty, mild chocolaty wet wood aroma. Brown, like rootbeer without any red tinge. The wet wood carries over to the flavors. Also has wet leather on the palate. Metallic at times with a weird unhopped savory finish. Interesting and unique, nice brew, rather enjoyable.
