Dark brown coloured body with a small tan head, only a centimetre tall. Aroma of roasted malt, light nuts, vanilla, toffee and a bit of oak and peat. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong rich malty flavour at first with a good dose of lactose and cream. Some nuts and dry earth near the end with vanilla, must and dirt along with a minor hit of oak and smoked peat. Aftertaste shows some mild nuts and earth along with a touch of milk, lactose and caramel, but this is overall very mild, dry and musty without too many good flavours or much of a stout-ness at all. This shows more of a porter, and that it still shows more of a mild ale than anything else. Overall, don’t expect too much here, but it sounds interesting and was decent at least, but not really worthwhile or a beer to go out of the way for. I sampled this 33 cL slightly stubby bottle purchased from Jason’s Market Place in Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan yesterday on 24-July-2017 for NT$122 sampled in my hotel room here in centrail Taipei, Taiwan a day later on 25-July-2017.

Bottle, as irresistibly labelled Abashiri Prison Stout. Dark brown with a light tan head that’s soon a coat. Roasty aroma is soon overcome by caramel syrup. Some mocha. Light to medium bodied, presumably some of the sugar is lactose. Quite sweet and caramelly, but the roast is enough to balance it pleasantly. Low key but pleasant.

Bottle from the Hokkaido fair at Hankyu. Black with a lacy head. Nose of chocolate, wood, soy sauce. Rich malt flavor, lots of chocolate and umami, wood, roast. Rather bitter finish. Wow, this is pretty decent. I was expecting much worse after drinking their gimmick beers. Not perfect, but not bad.
