Enjoyed on the Yokohama subway. Dark brown in color. Tons of molasses, malts, coffee, anise, nuts, and sweet dark fruits in the aroma. Decent body. Flavor is full of the molasses and roasted malts with some coffee and cocoa backing it up. Leaves you with a long bittersweet finish. Left me suprised, a very solild brew.

Domestic version (thanks Per). Opaque black/very dark brown, bif creamy expresso head, lace. Light smokey and grainy nose. Toasted, coffeish, malty, medium bodied - watery background, does not show alcohol much. Bonus suprise is smokey notes in the aftertaste. Hands down the best beer from China so far!

Tsingtao Dark ~355ml bottle-pours a creamy tan head. Black color. Aroma is chocolate, licorice. Taste is licorice, molasses, chocolate malt, good carbonation. Dark is usually not my taste, for occasional, this is a nice beer. Dated 7/21/01 with expiration 5/16/07.

Second Time Sampled:
Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head. Aroma of smoked malt, coffee and caramel. Medium-bodied; Strong smokey flavours with malt and coffee the strongest. Aftertaste is deep and bitter - showing good flavours throughout. Overall, a pretty good beer - definitely one to sample if here in China! I sampled this 355 mL bottle (labeled 6.0% abv) purchased from a small grocery store in Beijing, China last year, drunk during the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics on 08-August-2008. Sampled at a restaurant in a shopping centre with the Four Seasons hotel in Shanghai, PRC on 18-March-2005.

Draught, multiple locations, Qingdao
Very dark brown with a thin light brown head. The aroma is caramelly with a little bit of chocolate syrup. Light caramel notes, a bit thin, almost cracker-like character.
Sampled bottled at Wei’s Pizzeria in Kunming, Yunnan
Dark chestnut colour with a huge, thick, light brown head. The aroma has a light roastiness and appetizing leafy hoppiness. The body is moderately full with rich malty flavours of nuts, dark chocolate, and light coffee. One of the finer schwarzbiers I’ve had. 8-5-8-5-17 = 4.3

Bottled. Dark brown, rich head. Sweet woody nose. Grapefruity hops, molasses and dark bitter chocolate. Restrained sweetness and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Lightly roasty. Hoppy bitter finish. I'm stunned. This beer is actually really good.
