Bottle (from Japan, vintage 2013)
Rating #13000. Murky brown color, small off-white head. Aroma has toffee, alcohol, tart fruits, hints of vinegar. Medium to full-bodied. Toffee, tart fruits, yeastyness. Alcohol in the finish. Dessert beer with odd cellary vibe. Perharps aging has not gone totally ok.

9% popped this bottle of Daisen G’s 2012 Barleywine to celebrate hitting 200 likes on my page Kansai Beer Lovers. It pours a wonderful amber with a quickly dissipating head. A great fruity aroma of plum, figs and some port like notes. The taste isn’t as complex as other barleywines but it is full-bodied and the flavor has caramel at first then a nice rich malty sweetness followed by mild warming from the alcohol. Solid.

Subtle flavours, but nice.

Head is a small offwhite ring round the side. Hazy amber body. Earthy musty umami and caramel aroma with fruity alcohol and honey notes. Unusual. Sweet-dryish caramel and strawberry taste with earthy musty notes. Fullish body. Mild, slightly hot mouthfeel. Sweetish linoleum and earth aftertaste with tropical fruit and vanilla notes. Low on bitterness. Mild, light, and drinkable = lethal. Interesting. Many subtle and complex aromas. (0.2l draft at Craft Beer Keg, Nagoya. 9%, so 2007 vintage.)

33 cl bottle vintage 2010, brewed 09/2010, bottled 02/2011, BBE 02/2013
Aroma is sweet with berries, malt and some sugar. Flavour is also sweet with malt, berries and lots of sugar. Needs definitely more ageing (or more hops).

Draught at Ushi-Tora, Tokyo. (2006 and 2007 vintages side by side). Cloudy amber. Caramelly nose with grassy hops plums and madeira. Sweet and full bodied with carefyl bitterness. The ´07 version show up more pear esters and calvados. Elegant and mild barley wine.

Draught at the Microbrewer’s Beer Festa in Hiroshima. 2007 version. Medium amber to orange color, bug malt aroma with something port-like, fruits and a bit of funky cheese. No real hop presence. Flavor similar: huge, complex, malt, not much hops. Seems very English. Very enjoyable, and I think it should age well.

Pours copper with a small light tan head. Aroma is interesting for a barley wine. Citrus hops, sweet malts, alcohol, and caramel. Full, creamy body with a small, but nice, amount of carbonation. Flavor is dominated by the hops. Citrus bitterness through out this beer. Also peppery, caramel malts in the back, and alcohol. the finish is bitter with an alcohol warmth. Seems like a barley wine with IPA heritage.

Med amber color. The nose has apricots, cherries and puffed wheat. Alcohol is well hidden and the body is light despite being somewhat syrupy. Feels like a session brandy wine. Oranges wheaty finish. Interesting, but not over the top. Rerate Jan 2018 of a 2010 keg at Daisen tap takeover at Wiz. Dried cherries, strawberries, bread, stewed oranges, bread notes. Excellent. The mouth is fairly light with cherries and stewed oranges providing great depth. Low medium bitterness. Wow. This has aged well
