Bottle consumed at De Heeren. Clear yellow pour with a white head. Enticing barnyard bouquet. Superb mouthfeel with lemon and citrus notes leaping out at you. Lots of barrel and almost vinous like undercurrents. Somewhere in the distance are sweet malty backbeats. Perfect body.

The geuze made for De Heeren van Liederkerke’s nomination as best beer restaurant in the world according to this very site; made with both Cantillon and 3 Fonteinen lambic back in 2011, blended and bottled at Cantillon and only released by the restaurant, the only place that officially sells it to this day, in 2013. Needless to say, the price has probably evolved much more significantly than the geuze itself in the years that have passed since then, but since the stock is seriously declining and I had something to celebrate anyway, curiosity got the better of me and I ended up buying a bottle for the ridiculous price they charged, to share with my girlfriend Goedele. This geuze, very carefully poured, showed a creamy, very regularly shaped, egg-white, remarkably stable head and initially near-clear, ‘metallic’ orange blonde with fine strings of sparkling, cloudy and ‘dirty’ with the sediment added in the very end. Quite funky and woody aroma, fermenting plums, sour crabapples and old wrinkly apple peel, strong old sherry effect, grape peel and very old white wine, damp haystack, lots of wet old wood, moldy lemons, grapefruit peel, copper coins, old dry jute cloth, chlorine (growing in strength as the bottle progresses), unripe gooseberries, dry cider, wet jute bags, dusty cellar. Estery onset but relatively ‘clean’ for a traditional geuze, green gooseberry, sour apple and unripe nectarine impressions, lemony and lactic acidity in the middle becoming a bit burning in the end but not too much so (for me at least), medium spritzy carbonation (cider-ish), soft bready and sourish-wheaty body dried by the acidity but also by a tannic effect of wet old oak wood which becomes quite outspoken in the finish; leathery and hayish Brett effects are also added in a relatively pronounced way, followed by a deep, dim but long-lasting, earthy hop bitter note. Lots of old sherry-like oxidation is released in the end as well, testifying the age of the bottle in a noble, mature and rustic kind of way. More tannic-woody than regular Cantillon geuze, with a medium acid burn softened by the wood and a soft malty aspect, ending with a drying earthy bitterness. Very classy geuze as expected, aged elegantly and respectfully, but think twice before ordering this, as it is clearly not in proportion with the price charged by the restaurant.

750 mL bottle, drunk 8/13/16.
Clear copper body shows a smidgeon of head with low retention.
Strong acetic notes in the nose give hints of acetone, but it’s mostly passing. Highly fruity, suggesting raspberry and apple esters alongside buttery (oak?). No green apple, thankfully, but this still comes off a bit sharp and out-of-balance due to the high proportion of acetic acid here. Could just be the competition at this tasting is so intensely high. No alcohol noted.
In the mouth it fares better. Slightly sweet but with earthy and light vegetal notes of musty, intense cellar funk. A bit flabby, without the creamy, ultra-concentrated carbonation. Again, very strong on the acetic character with lots of acidburn on the end and a very yogurty, cheese rind-like lactic character that puckers the mouth. Very juicy, richly sour stuff.

Bottle at RBWG. Big thanks to Beau for this one! It pours a clear golden color. The aroma is rather cheesy with some good funk and acid. The flavor is very cheesy and wine-like. Funky and extremely sour. No acetic vinegar or hot alcohol notes. A funky, cheesy mouth puckering masterpiece.
