2004 bottle. Pours a light burgundy, muted leather like in the library of a rich mansion. Dull, clear, mostly, only a tinge of sediment (hey, at least there was some). Aroma is light cherries, raspberries and lightly sour, watered down balsamic vinegar. Black pepper on the very end of the nose. Body is lean, lightly thin and medium to medium-light bodied, tending towards medium-light. Small white head. Flavor is lightly tart black raspberry cola, with a strong sense of sourness, though it dosent stray the line of being bitter. Just sticks to the sour and finishes surprisingly quick. Much too much filtration on this, which sucks the lifeblood out of it, almost. If there is such a thing as just a sour ale, with pretty much no variation on the sourness aspect, this may be it.

Dark amber color. Too poor: just a bit sour, no sweetness, no character; quite thin, vinous, short.

Dark brown with orange-red shine, hazy. Yellow-brown head, gone in seconds. Woody, lactic & acetic acids in the nose, the last as in Balsamico. A sharp, spritzy bite by the acids comes first. There is malt behind it, but the colour seems more liquid colouring than dark malt to me. There is a fruity sugarness ("Traubenzucker") in it, ending in a heavy, woody finish. Medium-bodied, refreshing. A perfect example of 'Vlaams Oud bruin'. Closer to the original Rodenbach than Rodenbach 'classic'. Brij. Van Steenberge makes a few worthwhile beers (Bornem, Augustijn); they make one great beer - this - and one world-classic: the lagered pale needed to blend this beer - and which is never sold. And probably hold the world record on labelbeers.

Iron aroma indeed, not real good. Copper color. Sour cherry taste. It's actually a Flanders Red Ale i guess, but this one is not pretty good.

Burgundy. Sourish, full bodied, complex and balsamic. An irresistable Flanders style red ale.
