Bottle. Creamy off-white good mostly lasting head. Orange colour. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. moderate bitter nice vinius flavor. Long moderate bitter finish. Creamy palate. Better than expected. Nice barleywine.

Chevy Chase. DC 11.2oz ($5): Pours a amber color with a rather small head. Aroma is similar to 3 or 4 bitter aromas piled on top of one another. Taste is very much on the sweet side. Not very much aftertaste, but does leave a linger. Burned sugar kind of flavour in there. Some hops provide a nice little bitterness. I thought this would be worse, but it is actually ok; still, this is not something I would want to really drink again.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper with paperthin off white head leaving spotty lacing along the glass. The aroma is a bready malt and caramel. Thin mouthfeel with a pine and raisin malt. Hides the alcohol very well making it easy to drink. A very good barleywine from Ridgeway.

bottle at home ... copper ... thin white lacing ... sweet light caramel nose... big sweet blackcurrant and cherry ... some raw alcohol ... little marzipan ... not much to it... not as bad as i expected but not great

Insanely Bad Elf is insanely bad beer. There’s a severe disconnect between what the Brits and us Yanks consider an Imperial Red, and this horrid pint before me proves that we’ve trumped those limey bastards once again. The flavor is molasses and vanilla and sugar and alcohol and burn. I’m assuming the elf on the label is being punished for this beer’s production. (12/9/08)

33cl bottle from The Bottle Shop, Canterbury. Clear deep deep amber colour, with thin off white head. Aroma of hot alcohol and syrupy light malts and some hop. Yes, a typical Uk Christmas barley wine, in that there is plenty of crystallised citrus fruit. Better in mouth than I expected from the aroma and the finish is pretty good too. Drank it with Waitrose millionaires shortbread to combat the sweetness which worked well and highlighted the fruit and hops in this beer. I just don’t know if I like this or not. A bit single minded and not very subtle. Maybe just a bit one dimensional.
