Pitch black with a complex tapestry of dark malts that are rich and laden with mocha, bitter cocoa and oats. The hop aroma is fresh, balanced and spicy and drives a tantalisingly clean finish.

500ml bottle @ 5.2%. Pours black with a large tan head with great retention. Aroma: roasted malts, coffee, hint of chocolate, hops, dark fruit. Taste: strong roast malt and bitter coffee notes, a little bittersweet dark chocolate, some dark fruit and hops, very strong bitterness in the finish. Medium body, average carbonation, smooth creamy mouthfeel. Good.

Cask @ Gallows Bird Real Ale Festival XX, Espoo. Pours pitch black with a small bubbly head. Aroma of roasty malts, hints of coffee, milky chocolate and hints of cocoa. Taste is smooth, milky and slightly lactic with hints of roastiness, coffee and chocolate. Finish is smooth, slightly watery and roasty with some milky notes, hints of coffee and chocolate. A bit unbalanced, but gets slightly better as it warms up.

Bottle thanks to minutemat. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - chocolate and soy sauce. Taste - more of the same. Smoke and charcoal. Soy sauce again. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - interesting beer.
