330ml bottle. Opaque, darkest brown colour with average to huge, frothy, slowly osteoporosing, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Roasty, slightly chocolately, minimally smoky, dark malty aroma, an amalgamation of dark chocolate, milk chocolate and smoked eel. Taste is dry, woody, smoky, chocolately, roasty dark malty, hints of smoked eel, cold wood ashes, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, subtle sweetness with a touch of caramel, salted caramel, some rye spiciness; watery texture with oily smear, minimally too lively carbonation works against creamy, almost slimy palate. Quite complex - really good.

Pours chestnut brown from the bottle and leaves a tall, foamy head. Lots of evident carbonation. Aroma is wood smoke, licorice, chocolate. Taste trends sweet, but quite dry, with a light alcohol warmth. Lots of smoke, faint berry hints, but not a lot of depth. The beer’s weakness is the palate, which is plainly over carbonated and at times a touch thin. Okay, but I had higher hopes.

Buddel: Presumably cloudy, deep muddy-brown coloured, small and persistent tanned head; sweet-bitter nose of dried fruits, roasted malt and cacao-powder, even milk-chocolate detectable, herbal hops in the background; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, medium to full bodied, silky MF; lingering and slightly hoppier bitter-sweet finish with toasted malt, herbal hops and caramel, hoppy aftertaste. Surely one of the best German Porters...
