Edward (1917-2002) is our grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his five children. In his honor, this American Pale Ale is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Edward’s well. It is unfiltered and dry hopped.

Draught at Farm House Tap and Grill. Huge hop nose—orange, melon, passion fruit, lovely citrus and tropical fruit salad. Dirty, cloudy orange-gold with lace. Estery, creamy flavor, creamsicle, orange, biscuit and grain, a touch of caramel. Big bitter finish. Just a touch of butter or cream. Fabulous fruit and great flavor for a 5.2% beer. Drinks like an Imperial IPA. Really miraculous flavor for the abv.

Draft, Three Penny Taproom. Ok, so another flawless Hill Farmstead brew. The brewmaster’s description is spot on. Hazy orange color. Taste and nose mirror each other. Yeast, malt and hops are perfect. Lots of dry hopping. I really respect everything Shaun Hill has done at his farm. I dont personally drink many Pale Ales or seek them out BUT this is damn nice. And Pale ale drinkers should find this on draft or make the drive to Greensboro. Exceptional brew with lots of character.

Tastes straw-like, pale ale, murky with alright tracing. Blond colour. Nice strong hops. Doesn’t smell at first but hops hit you hard after. Good profile with a really good farmy aftertaste, as you make expect. I don’t taste the Hill, however. Lots of character in this one, certainly among the better I’ve had for the style. On tap at the Farmhouse Tap and Grill.

750mL growler, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany!), pours an opaque bright orange with a medium white head. Aroma of fresh floral and piney hops, lots of caramel malt. Flavour is very dry and florally, with floral hops, pine tree, dry biscuity / doughy malt, and some soapy notes. Finishes really dry and hoppy. Extremely full-bodied for a 5% pale ale. Could drink liters and liters of this. Most excellent.

On tap at Three Penny tap room
A - 1 finger creamy head off-white. Great head lacing. SRM of 3. Dark golden to dark brown. Tons of haze in the glass. Gorgeous. Looks like a light syrup so golden and hazey.
S- great hop resin on the nose. Smells like a mix between Simcoe and Centennial hops. Lots of bitterness and loads of that grapefruit citrus scent I’d expect.
T - Whoa. Dry hopped goodness all the way. Tastes like pounds of hops were added to this. The beer itself isn’t that intense but the post brew dry hop added the haze and intense taste. Pine resin and tangerines are here. Also, it finishes very dry.
M - 80% carbonation on the mouth swish. The dry hops linger for a while. The beer itself sort of fades quickly and swiftly.
O - intense and delicious. The one work to describe all HFS beers is "balance". They’re so balanced and remarkable.

A hazed blonde ale with a thick dark brown head. In aroma, a beautiful resinous hops, floral, clover field, wonderful. In mouth, a nice crisp biscuit malt with smooth floral hops, grapefruit pulp, nice and smooth! On tap at the brewery, March 12, 2012.

Listed as edward? and the barkeep told me it was from Hillstead Farms so I guess this is the rigght spot fer this beer. I have total respect for the gent named in honor of this beer, especially since it seems like an ipa but its listed here as a apa, very reserved and proper. This beer from the tap smells like ipa, but perhaps looks like a very light vanilla co2 picturesque foaming fun thing. Don’t see ipa with this kind of light body foaming. Taste is straight up milder ipa but still ipa. Not sure why this reates a 100 but hey, I’m no ipa expert but it is a little more intersting compared to yer typical bitter hop blast. Probaly one of your apa’s with personality bordering on mildly annoying. If you like IPA or strong apa, ignore my likable numbers and give this a try.

On tap at the Gingerman NYC. Rating 6000. Pours with a hazed golden hued body with a lasting white head. Aromas are super hoppy, with tropical fruit, tangerine, grapefruit, lightly dank with a light caramel malt character. Very clean. Maybe some Centennial in the hop bill? Flavors are bready, biscuity, dry, bitter, orange, tangerine. Really hoppy and dry. Very well made in a West Coast style. Lively, dry and bright. Hoppy and fresh, very solid!

Draft at Highland Lodge, paired with salmon with horseradish sauce. Yum. Cloudy orange color, huge off white head, great lacing. Amazing aroma of freshly cut grass and pine needles. Taste is extremely full bodied, malty, bready, with a bitter pine finish. Wow, is this really a pale ale? Wow.
