A decent fresh and smoothly wheaty German hefeweizen. Nice, but not special.

(Draught at Drie Dorstige Herten, Utrecht, 25 July 2013) Hazy yellow colour with frothy, white head. Malty, slightly fruity nose with notes of citrus, pineapple, banana and white bread. Fruity, wheaty taste with citrus, bread, tropical fruit, grass and a certain citric bitterness in a finish with hints of coriander. Medium body, with balanced sweetness. The fresh and summery hop character came as a positive surprise. Quite nice.

Tap @ Drie Dorstige Herten, large sample. Cloudy golden color, medium head. Aroma has wheat, slight hint of banana, soft grapefruit. Bartender said they used a bit of Cascade. Medium bitter taste, hint of sweetness. It’s a beer in dubio: it lacks the sweetness and refreshing qualities of a weizen, but it also lacks good hoppiness to be a hopfenweizen or anything. Although Cascade and weizen have been used more often, this is not the way to do it. I prefer sweeter hops with a (hopfen)weizen, like Citra, but not the piney and grapefruity ones. They don’t seem to properly fit.

330ml bottle. Cloudy orangey golden colour with average, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Slightly unspecific fruity aroma has hints with resemblance to peach, apricot, pear, blackberry, cautious yeasty overtones. Taste is initially moderately sweet unspecific fruity, a touch of honey, later unpleasantly strawy herbal bitter and spicy yeasty. Unbalanced, starts nice but offers a devastating finish.

(bottle, 33cl) Cloudy, golden colour with a short and diminishing foamy head. Yeasty, wheaty, a bit cara-malty and bready aroma with hints of apricots, peaches and cloves. Moderately sweet flavour with a tinge of sourness, medium to light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Mildly bready cara-malty and wheaty taste with a soft fruit-character of mainly peaches and a touch of citrus; moderately sweet and wheaty finish with a mildly fruity touch and phenolic spices. 16.V.12
