Belgian Inspired Dark Ale

Originally conceived along the lines of a Belgian Dubbel, Hell Hath No Fury … Ale morphed during development into something entirely different. Brewed with Belgian abbey-style yeast, Hell Hath No Fury … Ale is more akin to a roasty stout, offering warm, roasted notes of coffee & dark chocolate with fruity and clove-like aromas.

12 oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Bottled on 8/28/2015. Dark brownish black with a finger of light tan head that recedes into a ring. Aromas of dark fruit, some malt, some roasty notes, spices, a bit of caramel. Tastes of dark fruit, light roast, caramel, spices, some chocolate as it warms. Pretty spot on with the deScription, dubbel-y with a hint of stout-like characteristics.

Old rating. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head that hangs around. Aromas of prune, fig, tobacco, arugula and caramel. Flavor is more of the same with a creamy mouthfeel. Malts and fruit really jump out. Medium body with a nice smooth finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Hell Hath No Fury... Ale on 16 Dec 2015 at 14:53 - Score: 7

12 oz. bottle courtesy of Queenholly. Nice eye appeal in a Trappist glass, I also really like the label on the bottle. Thin lasting tan head in the glass. No is stout like. Rich, deep roasted malts with just a bit of candy sugar. Tastes of figs, fruity Belgian yeast, and chocolate malt. Palate is soft, fuller in body with a creamy texture. Nice.

Pretty nice dubbel. Pours black with mocha head. Aroma of floral hops and dark chocolate. Taste has bitterness and a little sweetness. Kind of like a hybrid between funnel and doppelbock. Interesting animal, if not necessarily a funnel. Bottle.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/9/2012. Pours pitch black color with a small 1 finger fairly dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, molasses, raisin, banana, coffee, clove, toast, roasted malt, light pepper, herbal, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity, balance, and strength. Taste of dark chocolate, banana, raisin, molasses, clove, coffee, roasted malt, toast, light pepper, earth, and yeast spiciness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, molasses, raisin, banana, clove, roasted malt, coffee, light pepper, and earth on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice flavor robustness, complexity, and balance; with zero cloying flavors noticed after the finish. A bit dry on the finish as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian style stout! Great flavor complexity, robustness, and balance; and very smooth to sip on. This was a very enjoyable offering.

Total Wine, Fairfax 355ml: Pours a brown with a small head. Aroma is pretzel, dark fruit, yeast, and some more pretzel. Taste is somewhat sweet. Taste has a bit of bitterness. Some coffee is present in some form. Plenty of fruitiness persists. I don’t really taste much chocolate, as the description says that i should. Anyway, I like pretzel beers. Aroma is better than taste though.

Malt syrupy, fruity, spicy, coffee, earthy . . . the flavors are overlapping. This just has too much going on for my palate.

Bottle as a road soda on the way back from Amsterdam. From the bottle so won’t comment on the appearance, but I’m sure the other raters have it described. Aroma has coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, raisins, overripe dark fruits and a little smokiness. Flavour is moderate sweet and light medium bitter with umami. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle, from secret santa. A dense, finger-thick light than head sits on top of a reddish, dark brown body. Prunes, roasted malts, a meaty touch and some hints of butterscotch in the aroma. The flavor doesn’t differ much from the aroma, but is more on the roasted side and less buttery. Full body, nice co2 level, and mostly roasted finish. A nice one, nothing more, and certainly not your everyday dubbel. 110930
