Thanks to Elke for gifting the bottle & to Anke for sharing your Christmas present! Hazy orange, thin, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of apple slices, pear, biscuit, honey, apricot jam, breadcrust, kitchen herbs, vague coriander. Taste has sweet apple & pear, some banana, all in all quite estery in a bready & honey-like malty profile with softly spicy bitter edges. Floral & peppery hoppy finish, lingering ripe yellow fruit, biscuit & honey, low alcohol glow adding to a spicy effect again. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Decent yet somewhat 'ordinary' blonde, the Tripel was more enjoyable.

The second commercial Ostdonk ('Haasdonk') beer, since end of last year; replaces their Pils, which in its original form has not been commercialized so far. Steinie bottle from Dranken De Moor, in the same style as the tripel but with ochre-yellow label instead of blue. Rather large-bubbled and bit irregular, pale greyish white, mousy head, quickly settling as a steady ring and some flat 'islands' in the middle, initially as good as clear, deep 'metallic orange' blonde robe with amberish hue, misty and almost 'real' amber with sediment. Aroma of strong banana ester, candyfloss, sweetbread, freshly cut sweet red apple, bubblegum, coriander seed, canned peaches, rainwater, diluted caramel sauce, subtler hints of ripe pear, something vaguely iron-like and braised carrots. Sweet onset, a strong amount of isoamylacetate (banana ester) combining with residual white sugariness into a notable bubblegummy effect, candy apple, peach and ripe pineapple accents, with a vague sourishness underneath enhanced by lively, minerally but not harshly numbing carbonation; slick, lean, somewhat glueish or resinous mouthfeel, actually feeling a tad thinner than the 6.6% ABV given on the label, straightforwardly cereally and caramelly malt sweetness with a clear metallic edge and sticky honeyish sugariness to it, clinging to the teeth but again in a thinnish kind of way. Archetypical coriander seed spiciness colours the finish, working well with a slightly floral, mildly peppery hop bitterness, but the coriander effect proves a bit stronger and lingers in a soapy-spicy, somewhat astringent way on the root of the tongue, though the caramelly malt effect, banana ester and unfermented sugars survive this softly spicy intermezzo and dominate the end phase. The metallic effect never ceases to 'zing' around all this and the residual sugars rather annoyingly stick to the teeth. Ostdonk beers, like so many classically conceived Belgian ales, remain a very local affair, but I heard that the average beer drinker at which they are aimed, is generally less enthusiastic about this one than about the tripel; I tend to concur, this is an 'okay' sweet Belgian blonde, but the tripel - in my memory and my ratings at least - was better in its respective style than this one is. Then again: didn't these guys tell me they were working on a quadrupel? If this idea is still on the table, then take your time to perfect it, fellow 'Groot-Beverenaars': if you pull that one off, this one will be soon overshadowed.
