Bottle from De Bierverteller, Utrecht. Aroma is roasted malt with chocolate, salty liquorice, ash, coffee, some mocha, bit burnt. Flavour is pretty bitter with a medium sweetness. Body is medium to full. Roasty and bitter, very good Imperial Stout.

1 March 2020. At Dok Brewing Company, with the lovely Anke. Cloudy black with a lasting, small, yellowish beige head. Aroma of dried fig, mushrooms, black olive, leather, plum, vanilla, cappuccino. Taste has sweetish fig, chocolate & nuts with an umami olive edge; herbal touch & bitter coffee powder accompany dark chocolate in the middle. Finish is dry, earthy hoppy, lingering umami notes, chocolate & warming coffee liqueur/whisky alcohol. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. I actually expected more 'medicinal' flavours here (perhaps those you'd expect in peated whisky) but anyway, it's a very solid Imperial Stout.

Strong stout by this Catalonian craft brewer, from tap at Dok Brewing Company. According to the brewer, who was present at Dok and whom I had a chat with, this one is called ‘medical’ because of the ‘pharmaceutical’ (cough syrup) bottles it comes in – see the image shown here… Undoubtedly this also refers to the historical image of stout as a tonic beneficial to one’s health. Anyway: medium thick, creamy but gradually opening, mocha-beige head on a pitch black beer. Aroma of coffee grounds, ‘fondant’ chocolate, espresso, treacle, roasted chicory, nutmeg, old raisins, bayleaf, cloves, whisky. Sweetish onset, dried figs and dates, very light beefy umami accent, soft; medium carbonation (actually on the fizzy side for this style), hard-caramelly, hazelnutty and bitter-chocolatey malt body, quickly evolving to a long, coffeeish roasted bitterness, peppery, drying and mouth-filling yet remaining well in balance with the more caramelly sweetness. Lots of bitter black chocolate, spicy hops and warming but not annoyingly wry, brandy-like alcohol in the finish, tying everything together. Classic flavour pattern for an imperial stout – even a bit ‘old school’ in fact, no frills, exaggerated alcohol strength or exaggerated sweetness, just a plain old imperial stout the way they were made twenty or thirty years ago. Extremely well balanced, lovely beer.
