Coastbuster started as a Side Trail beer that was so well-liked we had to add it to the Year Round lineup. Inspired by the gloriously effervescent qualities of hop varieties common to West Coast style Imperial IPAs, Coastbuster displays the best of what these hops have to offer: their tropical, fruity, and floral aromas and flavors. With a light malt character and a dry finish, this is a beer designed to let the most succulent aspects of Simcoe, Amarillo, Columbus, and Cascade shine through while keeping the bitterness in balance.

Draft: Poured a bright orangey color ale with a nice foamy head with good retention. Aroma of citrusy notes with some grapefruit notes also noticeable. Taste is a mix of citrusy notes with some grapefruit notes and some light bitter notes with some malt that is also detectable. Body is full with good carbonation. Body is full with good carbonation. Well brewed IIPA with good balance between hops and malt.

Sample at GABF 09/26/2015, thanks to my sis for assistance with note-taking. Hazy orange pour with a medium thin white head that dissipates steadily. Aroma of citrus, hops and malt. Medium body with flavors of floral hops, fruit and malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a fruity hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

On tap at Brickhouse. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of earthy tropical fruit with notes of grass, grain and noon supporting. Flavor has a decent amount of onion with a bit of grass and a sweet grain backbone.

Pour is a orange with a small white head. Aroma is a melon fruit with a big caramel malt. Flavor is a very nice grapefruity herbal with some chewy, sweet caramel malt backbone. Maybe a bit too much malt but it does not override the hops. This is a beer to drink extremely fresh, I can see the malt overpowering the hops once this gets some age on it.

Many thanks to Rian for sharing. Nice fresh hoppy nose. The beer starts fresh and floral. Hoppy, slightly sweetish, fresh. Bitter aftertaste with hints of sweetness. Not too floral, piney viscous. Round and nice but not too intense.

Bottle. Hazy golden body with a frothy, off-white head. Aroma of citrus, orange, grapefruit, toasted grain, bread. Hint of caramel and floral hops. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/sticky texture, lively carbonation. Grapefruit skin taste with light resin, lemon and citrus. A bit of biscuit and raw grain flavor in the finish. Nice beer.

Several 16oz pints at Frank’s Bar Chicago. Pours a clear orange with some ringing white head. Nose is fairly classic, orange, some tangerine, pine, soap, some sticky honey, malt. Flavor is the same, sticky pine, sweet honey, malt, some biscuit, orange juice, tangerine, lemon. Full bodied, sticky finish.

12oz bottle. Orange body, slightly hazy. Creamy, foamy head...steady. Has that burnt hop oil tone I’m not so wild about and sort of associate with lesser West Coast IIPAs. Bold, resinous hops...but not really capturing all that they can for 2014. Piny, scorched hop tones. There is a lot of hop depth, so it still ends up working pretty well. A pretty good beer, classic IIPA, but not really competing with new school offerings.

tap at Dash In - Pours hazy gold with a small white head. It has a nice citrus hop aroma. The flavor is well balanced with citrus and floral hops and a substantial malt backbone. As others have noted it’s not as bitter as many DIPAs. I still thought it was an enjoyable brew, leaving some lasting bitterness on the palate. Very good... not great.
