Belgian blonde with allspice ('Jamaican pimento') for a local club. Initially very thick and foamy, irregularly lacing, snow white head, but quickly receding and opening, until an irregular ring around the glass remains; lightly hazy deep and warm 'metallic' golden robe, an 'old gold', with very fierce, champagne-like sparkling throughout, more deeply misty but equally 'sparkly' with sediment added. Aroma of ripe banana, sweetbread, dough, meringue, candy apple, pear, indeed very obvious ethereal allspice hovering over it all (anise-, cicely- and lavender-like, bit bath foam- and even cough syrup-ish generally speaking), bread crust, pineapple, bubblegum, fennel. Fruity, sweetish onset with sourish undercurrent, accents of banana, pineapple and ripe pear, something ripe nectarine-like as well but very subtly so, lively but 'refined' carbonation, slick mouthfeel, light and elegant white-bready malt sweetness with a layer of residual white candi syrup sugariness on top, very honeyish effect seamlessly connecting with the sweet-and-ethereal, perfumey allspice factor at the back, rising up strongly retronasally but adding a soapy note to the finish as well. The finish bears a pleasant late but spicy, earthy hop bitter note, while that bath foam- and cough syrup-like effect of the allspice as well as banana ester sweetness remain. Technically more or less correct, but way overspiced in a not very classy, old-fashionedly Belgian and crude way. Allspice, like coriander seed and other spices, can surely add a touch of complexity and additional bouquet in certain beers, but then the effect should be much more subtle. Still, as a sweet and simple Belgian blonde that goes down easily, I suppose the Ertegemse Trekkers will not complain about this too much...

Bottle sample @19de Internationale BierHappening, Zottegem.

Small white rim over totally clouded milky-yellowish beer. Nose of lavender and allspice. Very perfumed, going towards pungent. Exotic spice mix flavour, as the aromas upon entering a toko Whiff of bananaester, but the spices keep overpowering everything. Light body, spritzy MF. In comparison to for instance the Saint Clausienne, also with Jamaican pepper, this one is much more plain, more (too) behaved.

29/IV/2012 - 33cl bottle @ ZBF 2012 (Leuven) - BB: n/a (2012-440)
Clear light orange beer, creamy white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very spicy, lots of cloves, little fruity. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of cloves, bitter hops, touch of sugar. Aftertaste: more cloves, bitter hops, little medicinal. Maybe a bit overdone on the use of cloves, but it gives the beer it's distinct character.
