Bottle split at L6, thanks to LKS, 21/03/19. Lightly hazed mahogany brown with a decent beige cap. Nose is toffee, dusty fruits, nutty twang, sweaty knickers, brown bread. Taste comprises brown bread, dusty fruits, wooded tones, light oxidization, light sugars, toffee trace. Medium plus bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a fading edge of alcohol. Not bad for the age.

Bottle shared at the Columbus Tasting 21/03/2019. Many thanks A clear cola brown coloured pour with a halo of dirty head. Aroma is umami, soy, brown malts, jammy fruits, cranberry. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, oily, malts, raisin, salty black malts, burnt apple, . Palate is oily, sticky, lowish carboantion.

Bottle shared in London - picked up at GBBF. Pours clear brown with a bubbly tan head. Not bad, some toffee, aged berries, leather, oily sugars. Full bodied, chewy, with fine carbonation. Warm finish, oxidized, more caramel and old leathery berries. So so.

Hazy red brown ale with no head. Sweet apples in aroma, cidery, very oxidized. Sweet lightly hopped BW with strong alcohol warmth, overbearing and unbalanced. This is off. Bought at Utobeer, Borough Market, London, February 2005. May 2005, Capflu’s BW tasting.

Bottled. Clear ruby, no head. Vinous nose. Very sweet with some caramel and chocolate as well as coffee. Full bodied and very salty. Comparing to Right Angler it is more fruity/berryish, and alcohol plays a more prominent part. Warming and intense.

Retired this might be, it’s still freely available in London, I’m told Disparate yellowish-transparant head, gone quickly from an opaque dark-redbrown beer, purplish shine. Seaweed, salty, algues, liquorice, alginate, ink, mashed potatoes aromas. WEIRD, ’t other one said. Inky, walnuts, vinous flavours. Alcohol and fusels obvious. Quite sweet, liquorice-like finish, but the walnut bitter keeps around, as does some exotic spice. Beer is as flat as a pancake. Why do British brewers insist on 9% ABV, if their yeast gets out of breath halfway? The corpse is full, slick, oily. Might have been quite good when alive, if too young. Ballards should go fishing, for a weekend, to get some new ideas.

Hazy red coloured body with a thin off-white head. Aroma of sugars & some hops. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong malt with a good full flavour. Overall, good to try! I sampled this beer at the November RB party at Founder’s in Alexandria, Virginia on 20-November-2004.
