Fourth in our series this is Dan's "Unplugged Imperial Stout." This beer is handcrafted for you with the same care that English brewers used when they brewed Imperial Stouts for the Russian Royal Family. This is a strong beer brewed with lots of black barley. Back home that makes this beer an excellent candidate for lying down in your beer cellars.

Can’t remember who I got this one from, but thanks. Consumed on 11/23/2005. Pours that gold-amber color we all know and love from New Glarus (alot of their beers look very similar). Foamy white head is still quite lively, while the beer is, of course, filtered and clear, little to no lacing from the beige head. Aroma of toffee. Yep, just toffee. Only moderate roast, more of a toasted grain note, sweet and simple, lightly sugary. Flavor is caramel sweetness, very high, with a light mix of light roast and toffee. One of the most uncomplex beers I’ve ever had. I don’t even think we could finish the 12 oz bottle between 3 people. Just syrupy sweet caramel and sticky toffee, very sugary. No hop notes. No alcohol, fizzy carbonation is still quite high. Raisiny, almost sweet, sugary dates grow on the palate as well. Like a thick dose of caramel sugar and little else. Cloying.

Pitch black, little rim of dark brown foam. Nose of dark chocolate, tobacco and lo-o-o-o-ots of malt. Faint aroma of Lapsan Souchong tea. Typical sourish stout - black grains - edge, going over in full bitter dark chocolate; hints of grapes, tobacco & cigarette ash, smoked. Faint malt whisky - like. Bitter grapes or grapekernels? Well bodied, but less chewy than such a big beer would suggest. Acidity thins it down quite a bit. Alcoholwarming. What the New Glarus U.I.S. lacks in sheer massiveness, is immediately regained in drinkability. I could happily sup this a whole evening. I tend to agree with the label that lying this down might be a great idea. Thanks, Jamie!

Pitch black, completely opaque with a thinnish brown head with larger bubbles. Aroma of caramel, roasted malt, prunes, raisins, smoke and even some liqourice. Medium to Light-bodied (wierd!); Strong pungent liquorice flavour up front fading to a roasted maltiness and a somewhat sweet taste. Aftertaste shows some pit fruit tastes with some roasty malt bitterness. Overall, a decent imperial stout, but wierd...not a usual one at all. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle received from mike [bbb63] on 26-September-2004. Many thanks for this rare treat from wisconsin to mike!!

A pitch black beer with a chocolate brown head. The aroma is slightly sour, but with nice malty, chocolate, and coffee notes. The flavor is malty with notes of chocolate and hints of coffee.

Stout? Yes. Imperial? No. Not nearly hardy or complex enough - this is more like a slightly heavier sweet stout - cocoa and caramel, a touch of hops - kind of thin in the beginning, but fills out a bit with a late roastiness - overall unimpressive - the czar is frowning on you, new glarus.

I really like this as a souped-up sweet stout. Poured dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of rich dry roasted malt (very toasty), with hints of caramel and fruitiness. Nice rich chocolate flavor with strong, almost tart dark fruit, a touch of caramel, and finishing with medium bitterness. Very smooth for an Imperial Stout and rather thin of body, which is why this is, in fact, similar to several sweet stouts. Me likey. Mike (BBB63), in his infinite beer wisdom, shipped this bottle to me.
