Our Southampton Saison is a faithful rendition of this classic "farmhouse" style ale. Originally brewed for consumption during the summer months, its slight tartness and intense fruitness make it a most refreshing drink anytime of year.

Bottle, St Albans Beer Festival 2005, however actually supplied by Duff via ClarkVV, so thanks to them both. Cloudy orange gold colour with lasting white head. Sour citric beer with floral yeasty notes. Gorgeous. Doesn’t try to do too much, but what it does, it does extremely well. Very well made.

Sampled at the Ohio Labor Day gathering, provided by me (via trade with somebody...). Light orange-yellow body, thin off-white to light cream head. Honeylike aroma, floral, with crackers, pepper, and spices. Light but strong (yes, the words I wrote on my ratings sheet) fruity body with a spicy bouquet of floral notes, rich but subtle at the same time (ah, that must have been what I was going for). Medium-bodied and fairly complex with a nectary finish. Reminded me a bit of the Cuvee des Fleurs but more subtle and not quite as good.

2004 bottle compliments of Bucknaked. Pours a warm toned orange golden, bottle conditioned and nearly opaque. Small white head. Aroma of light yeast, plenty of hops and light yeast, though unfortunately not really funky. Light citrus. Flavor of hops right off the bat. That’s kind of annoying, but it gets good and yeasty/malty with a wonderful body as always from this brewery. The spices are nowhere overdone while the malt is balanced by the hops.. It’s not the bitterness I have a problem with, it’s just that I dont think saisons should have this much of a hops apparency. Spicy, but should have more spiciness from the yeast and spices. Needs more funk, but good body. After it warms and breathes sufficiently it has a ton of plasticy yeast and hops very similar to most Cisco brews.

Bottled, thanks hopsrus! Hazy pale amber. Honey aroma. Rich with some grassy hops and restrained sweetness. Light earthy funkiness and slightly salty finish. Good!

Cloudy golden color. Nice grassy and spicy aroma, and a light wheat fruitness. Quite simple taste, some malt, high liquorice level, yeasty and spicy; strong final bitterness. Average…

An unclear golden beer with a huge lazing white head. The aroma is very hoppy with notes of sweet malt. The flavor is of coriander and hops and with a dry end. This is an OK beer, leaning towards average. I’m suprised to see the very high overall rating. Thank to Jeppe (Bierkönig) for sharing this bottle.

(draught) Pilsner-like golden beer; little white head. Very delicate-fruity nose (I get passionfruit - or is that suggested by the wit-passion alongside? maybe very sweet grapefruit). Tart, fruity taste - again grapefruit or passionfruit. Just a bit grssy, or freshly drying hay. Yoghurt-like finish. Light to medium bodied. Aftertaste is again something very passionfruit-like. This is a very nice Saison. Same as with the Brooklyn - it needs ironoxide. USA brewers seem to think Saison were delicate greenhouse beers - they weren't, they were quite robust!

Pale gold with a slight copper tint - musty, cellared aroma, with earthy notes, and a slight alcohol presence - flavor is tart up front, with some mellow fruit flavor and sweetness making an appearance, mostly white grapes - this makes way for a slight alcohol flavor, tiny malt presence, and lots of earthy, grainy, grassy flavors leading into the crisp, slightly peppery finish, along with the reappearance of a slight tartness - quite a bit of hops in the finish as well - this is clean and quenching - great for a warm spring or summer evening.

Herbal, soft maltiness/yeastiness; slightly tart finish; earthy, orangey. A step away from greatness.
