Matt was inspired by Matt VandenBerghe and Matt Bonney (Bottleworks and Brouwers in Seattle), who personify the spirit and dedication that has helped craft beer become the vibrant industry it is today. This Beer was originally Brewed to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Bottleworks, and will be released every few years from the Brewery. Matt is made with two Munich malts, two Smoked malts and two types of Belgian candy sugar. It is aged in Kentucky Bourbon and Apple Eau de Vie barrels from Clear Creek distilling. Matt is deep and lush with notes of apple, chocolate and smoke.

Bottle into a snifter showing opaque dark caramel brown with no head despite an aggressive pour. The nose shows a strong alcohol background with sweet notes of figs, molasses, caramel, smoke, bourbon, and hints of raisins and light red apple. The palate is full bodied, oily, and slick with no carbonation. Flavors of brandy, light apple, figs, Belgian yeast, and molasses but completely dry with a light vanilla background. The finish shows a lot of bourbon - vanilla, smokiness, and savory umami notes. Very light alcoholic heat despite the high ABV.

I didn’t rate this? I had it with Bonney back in the day. Ticked 5/5. Right on. Has a bit of haze. No head. Medium brown. The aroma is a bit soy sauce, hazelnut halva, and rice syrup...it’s a bit complex aroma and these were the first three I pulled out. That eau de vie comes across strong. On the palate, this is soft, sweet, light dates, prune, some fruity dark sugars. The big thing is that it is refined, and smooth.

Bottle, shared by bergstaden. A murky dark brown beer with a minimal sized, close to just a rim of bubbles, beige head. The aroma is quite oxidized, boozy and sweetish, with leather, raisin, wood, some chocolate and tobacco, even some apple hints and plums. The flavor is quite sweet, with a decent bitterness, quite a bit of warmth, and roasted malts, some bonfire and raisins, leather and tobacco, hints of dried fruits and a touch of dark sugar. It’s full bodied and quite warming on the palate, some carbonation left, but it’s quite flat, and with an everlasting finish. Wow, this is delicious indeed, hope HotD decides to brew it again. 170311

Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours a hazy dark copper-brown color with a medium thin foamy white head that diminishes gradually to a film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of bourbon, vanilla, dark fruit and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of charred malt, dark fruit, oaky bourbon and vanilla. The finish is oaky with a bourbon and malt aftertaste. Good beer all around.

2013 batch shared by Pruf. I had the original batch a while ago thanks to Timothy. I guess I should finally rate it. Pop the cap and pours like a dead dark tea. Who needs carbonation? Aroma is very strong, alcohol strong, and lots of autolysis. All of that covers up potential smoke or anything positive. Its actually the stuff I hate in big beer. If I sip the beer without breathing its doable. In the flavor I even get a little smoke, charred black malts, its not sweet, Its got lots of tough flavors. The flat body does not help. But its better than the sum of its parts.
