PUGACHEV ROYALE is a more developed version of Pugachev’s Cobra. We added cacao nibs and vanilla beans to a select few barrels of Cobra during its eight months in Bourbon Barrels, then transferred it to brandy barrels for an additional 10 months of aging. Royale displays sweet, ripe fruit notes doused with incredible chocolate aromatics. This is a truly decadent beer to be saved for a special occasion, and will evolve in the cellar for years to come.

Poured from a 2015 bottle. Aroma is rich with lots of chocolate as well as some dark fruit notes with plum, prune and raisin. Some medium light brandy and bourbon notes with hints of oak. Light vanilla and roast notes. Pours black with a small, medium thin, dark mocha head that recedes quickly and disappears. No lacing and fairly long legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with quite a bit of chocolate and some slightly lighter roast notes. Moderate alcohol heat with some bourbon and brandy notes. Light vanilla notes with some faint oak. Medium light bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but it lacks any vanilla character or even chocolate for that matter. Flavor and aroma is dominated by the barrel character. It’s a good beer, but its hot and the adjuncts don’t show through at all really.

Bottle courtesy of Hackobock. Pours black with a small mocha head leaving both some sparse trace and prominent legs on the glass. Smell is intense, malty, fruity and boozy with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, butterscotch hard candy, vanilla fudge, charred wood, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, raisins in rum, dried cherries, moist soil and bourbon alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, salty, malty, fruity and boozy. Mouthfeel is fat, oily, viscous, round, boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with roasted malts, burnt caramel, vanilla fudge, charred wood, roasted coconut, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, ammonium chloride, raisins in rum, fruity slightly dry sherry, minerals and brandy/bourbon alcohol. Compared to the regular version this almost feels dry. Reminds me of a complex sherry. More sophisticated than the original but also more challenging requiring more time and consideration to appreciate. Tasty but I think I prefer the simpler decadent original.

Bottle with mega-thanks to Alen! Shared in the early stages of the Homer "welcome to California tasting. Pours opaque black with a tiny tan head. Aroma has lots of bourbon, brandy I guess as well. chocolate, molasses, roasty malts, dark sugars. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, strong bourbon, lots of vanilla here as well. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. This is a darn nice beer, but it is not surprising given how good Cobra is.
