0.33 l bottle from ’De Bierhoeder’ as ’De Vlijt De Giro in Nederland’, best before May 2017, in celebration of Marcel Kittel’s second stage win in Arnhem. Clear, luscious red (not pink) with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, pinkish head. Sweetish, grainy and slightly spicy aroma of sweet malts, grains, old bread and some butter. Sweetish, very grainy and slightly spicy taste of caramel, sweet malts, grains, straw and some butter or popcorn, followed by a short, slightly bitter and a little spicy finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Not sure about the origins of the colour, but it doesn’t have any influence tastewise apparently. Nothing you should celebrate anything with.

Bottle from a Deen supermarket in Lelystad. Lightly lacing, irregularly shaped, cream white, moussy head over a misty deep peach blonde beer with brownish-amberish hue. Aroma of dried orange peel, cloves, white pepper, curry spices, papaja, cardboard, earthy turnip or beetroot, old cookies, dusty dried flowers, red apple, unripe peach, nutmeg, hay, mouldy lemon, bitter honey. Soft fruity onset of unripe peach, redcurrant and red apple, medium carbo, dryish and softly sourish from the start with just a tad of sweetishness, bit ’dusty’ feeling which increases a bit towards the finish, spicy phenols accompanying the whole palate over a backbone of bready, very lightly toasted malts; finish is yeasty and phenolic as well as drying hoppy in a very earthy, leafy, dried spice kind of way, with floral and light citrus peel like aromatic aspects. The yeastiness, visibly apparent from the start, adds to the earthy impression but it does not become thoroughly ’dirty’. Quaffable, but not really impressive in any aspect, just another Belgian style blonde.

33cl bottle from Wijnhandel Versluis at home. Looks like tea with thin and quickly disappearing head. Nose watery sugary sweetness and bitter hops. Taste sugary sweet like roosvicee lemonade. Yeast, piney, toast, very bready but above all it’s flat and lifeless. Very little carbonation, lives up a little when taken in the mouth. Below average, sweet sugar water.
