First brewed in 1985, Arkell Best Bitter is an amber session ale with a mild caramel and biscuit malt body and a subtle floral hop finish. With only 4% alcohol by volume, this well-balanced English-style bitter is the perfect session ale for any occasion!

Notes from April 2010 Sealed six pack smuggled across the border. Snazzy-looking Duke portrait bottle caps to add to the collection. Pint glass pour. A somewhat dull, filtered amber-colored body. An inch of thin, eggshell head. It looks bored. Not a whole lot on the smell. Toasted brown bread crust, some caramel, glassy pine. Smells a bit of leather too. Taste is mild & doughy. A touch muddy/minerally, with a so-so bite of grassy hops. Dry, yeasty, peppery finish. Lackluster carbonation. Tacky mouthfeel. Dusty going down. A decent thirst quencher. Not something I'd buy again though. Actually, I think my uncle bought this for me while on vacation over there.

Draft - Toffee and some light twig. Clear deep gold with almost no head. Toffee and some nice earthy twig that is well balanced with sweetness. Really nice.

Canette 473ml.

Hazy amber color, with sparse head. Light malt aroma and malt flavor; the mouthfeel is light; it has a light fruity touch and very light yeast; the bitterness is below the average.
Easy to drink, but a bit simple.

Aroma has a little caramel sweet malt to it, but nothing overly indulgent here. Taste is metallic, tinny. A vague bitterness appropriate for the style ’bitter.’Decent head retention - it looks alight with a dark amber. Ends in some sourness. Tall can.

Originally rated June 2004. Second Wellington beer tested tonight. Good, it’s quite different from the "Special Pale Ale". Light amber in colour with a small disappearing head. I can smell green apples. Tastes mildly bitter, not as much as expected, and with hints of those apples. Pretty damn good.

From cask at the Cloak and Dagger, Toronto. Thin, somewhat flavorful bitter, but not really enough. Flavors of fruit, caramel, bubble gum, pepper. Good fruit and spiciness. Very sessionable, but very light and could get boring. --- Beer merged from original tick of Arkell Best Bitter on 20 Sep 2008 at 22:35 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 6 | Flavor - 6 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 6.
