Barrel-Aged Sour + Blending + Time

The epitome of our sour beer blending program, taking the very best barrels from our library and blending beer that’s been aged for over 3 years for a truly Gueuze-inspired beer. This summer blend is very light and spritzy with bundles of juicy fruit character from the old fruited barrels and funky yeast strains. This beautifully balances the sour punch occurring from both fermentation and maturation developing in barrel.

The beauty of this years blend comes from 3 barrels that amalgamate together to bring a unique brilliance to The Blend 2018. Barrel 293: named ‘the fruit mongler’, is a single barrel blend of last years blend 17, with a touch of aged Wild Goose Chase and the lees of a barrel of Redwood. Barrel 319: a white wine barrel aptly named ‘Finger Crusher’ that held a year old Sourdough that has aged to perfection. Barrel 453: A Bordeaux red wine barrel first used to age a Modus blend for Beyond Modus 3.

Bottle from whoever owns them now, bought online. There can't be that many left out there, in the wild as it were. I really enjoyed the blend of different barrel aged beers, each giving something. There's a lot going on!

Bottle 0.75l from our archive, the sixth one for our ninth wedding anniversary. Almost clear, gold colored. AROMA- clean, noble, sour, sour apple, gooseberry, cantaloupe, a bit herbal. FLAVOR- smooth, neutral, quite sour, slightly tart, sourdough, sour apple, apple with carrot, gooseberry, touch of sour flavors from wooden barrel. Medium to fuller bodied. Great.

750ml bottle - Pours a yellow gold colour with a light haze and a small fine foamy white head. Aroma is tart fruit, lemon and grapes, damp straw and barnyard. A light sweet and acidic taste, sour apples, lemons, funk and woody flavours with a semi-dry tart finish. Nice.

Tap at BeerGeek Bar. Misty yellow body, no head really - but could we really expect one? Pungent aroma, ooh, this is quite on point - barrel, red win in particular is there, funk all over the place, a touch of glue, sweetish really too. Lean, citric tart taste, earthy funky touches, apple going towards glue, quite drinkable. An very nice quasi-gueuze really.

Tap at Beergeek. Much more nuanced than the 2019 version. Is it the extra year of age? Very probable. But anyway, lots of funk, assertive sourness, great balance, easy drinking. Rather thin body, moderate carbonation.

75cl bottle @ beer share Christmas gathering, The Coracle, Dec '19. Pours a misty golden yellow, frothy white bubbles atop. Aroma of fruity wild lactic funk. Taste is super crisp with excellent wild character, with excellent tart fruity moments consisting of grape, white wine, lemon and grapefruit citrus. Very good.
