Brewed since 1994, our Black Chocolate Stout has itself become a modern classic, heralded the world over. It achieves its dark chocolate aroma and flavor through the artful blending of six malts and months of aging. Properly kept, it will improve in the bottle for many years.

Pours dark brown but looks almost black in the glass. A not too big (but ok for abv) dark yellowish head, ok retention and close to no lacing. Aroma: a strong dark/bitter chocolate note, followed by notes of coffee and burnt caramel, plus a hint of spiciness/pricklyness. It's a pretty intense and well defined aroma. Taste is even better: the strong chocolate flavour is still there, but now not so prominent. There's a burnt caramel malty base that brings a bittersweet foundation, strong coffe/coffee grains notes, an interesting hint of spiciness and a balsamic finish and aftertaste, with a reminiscence of liquorice. Alcohol is perfectly hidden and flavours feel clean and defined. There's strong sweetness and even stronger bitterness, with a slight dry bitter edge in both taste and aftertaste. Intensity, depth, balance: you can find them all in this stout. Thick/dense bodied with medium or slightly above medium carbonation, surely more carbonated than your average imperial stout. Many imperials feel softly/smoothly full in the mouth; this one feels full as well, but in very 'dry' way. It's not exactly my kind of mouthfeel for this style, but it does it's job in bringing intensity and cleanly defined flavours. Overall, this is a wonderful stout.

355ml bottle from hopt.it. Winter 2018 vintage. Pours black, with moderate brown foam, very fine. Aroma is intense when the bottle is opened, giving lots of chocolate and liquor, plus it has coffee, caramel/molasses, nutty. Body is on the thin side, with soft tickling carbonation. Taste is pretty sweet, with a nice roasty bitterness too. Final is thin but long.

355 ml Winter 2018 bottle. Murky dark brown with a fluffy mocha colored head. Raisins, roasted burnt malt, cocoa, toffee, espresso, dark chocolate, liquorice, dried pear. Dry roasty bitterness, some sweetness. Full bodied, slick texture, soft carbonated, dry roasty sweet and warm finish. A very nice classic Imperial Stout, very balanced and no pastry nonsense to be find here.

Thuis uit een flesje van 35,5 cl. Zwarte kleur, bruin schuim. Versie is “winter 2018”. Aroma licht chocolade, niet heel nadrukkelijk. Smaak vol, chocolade, ook stevige nasmaak. Proeft de alcohol wel.

Adding in my 300 Beers To Try ticks because I want to see how they impact my stats and some of them I will never see again. Will however re-rate them when practical. Bottle at what is now The Flintgate in Wesybridge.

12 oz bottle from Beer Peddlers. Black pour, small beige head, settles quickly. Aroma is bitter roast malts, dark chocolate, small hit of coffee. Taste blends it all together perfectly, chocolate, coffee, cocoa. Slick and smooth, with a bit of heat.
