Big, but not huge, this American Chocolate Rye Stout fires off a lot of coffee and chocolate notes. Balances well, but rides high on hop character at 60 IBU’s while the Rye finishes it dry.

A specialty brew. Grab it when you see it. 7% ABV.

Dark opaque black color, steady beige head. Hayish and toasted aroma. Medium-bodied. Some citrus, taosted notes, feels more like black IPA than stout.

Sampled from a 0.65l bottle @ Top Hops (BA) Bottle Share. This is a deep dark brown one - near black in the glass and it has a small bubbly beige top that's only leaving minimal lacings down the sides. The nose is minty, some chocolate, still coffee, espresso and chocolate cake frosting. Nice! It has a soft carbonation level and a thin oily mouthfeel. Really nice flavors. Some herbal coffee, chocolate and cocoa nibs. Lingering in the aftertaste. Quite a nice one! Actually, I haven't had a bad or boring beer in way to long now. 15.06.2013

Aroma has tons of coffee roast character with some secondary chocolate character. Medium high fruity esters with notes of fig, plum and cherry. Some rye and caramel notes as well. No hop aroma, but there is some alcohol to it. Pours an opaque dark brown, almost black with brown highlights on the edges. Thin light tan head that recedes very quickly leaving just a film on the edges. Taste starts with sweet coffee roast and chocolate character. There is a bit of rye spice mid palate. Quite a bit of fruit in the flavor as well, especially fig and plum. Finishes fairly dry with low to moderate astringency. Some coffee and roast in the finish as well as a bit of alcohol. I don't get much hop flavor, just a touch of citrus. Mouthfeel is medium bodied but somewhat silky. The alcohol warmth is surprisingly noticeable for such moderately sized beer. Astringency is low to medium an a bit strong. Low to medium carbonation. Overall I really like the dark malt and rye characteristics of this beer, but I find the esters and alcohol a bit strong; this makes me think the fermentation wasn't as clean and temperature controlled as it should have been. I waited too long to drink this to get a good feel for the hop character. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
