Brooklyn Winter Lager is the answer to the heavy ales and stouts that emerge in wintertime. Though dark in color with a sturdy presence, Brooklyn Brewery's Schwarzbier-inspired lager layers notes of chocolate, roasted barley, and dark bread into a 5.6% ABV frame that finishes surprisingly light and pleasantly dry. Winter means different things depending where you live, but Brooklyn Winter Lager is ready for any chill.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark brn/blk with a beige or tan head. Aroma of chocolate and arguably Noble hop. Nearly med body. Flavor is chocolate, very roasty malt, and something like Noble grassiness. A bit different I think from the majority of Schwarzbiers, but quite tasty. Dry and moderately bitter.

3 month old bottle A: Plum/black pour with 1/2 of tan foam that held up well leaving thick lace. S: Complex nutty aroma of herbal hops, roast coffee and chocolate. T: Herbal or orange citrus hops, much lighter roast or coffee and very faint chocolate. Quite good but thin; the smell promised more. M: Very light bodied even for 5.6. Low to average prickly carbonation and a powdery finish. Crushable for sure. O: I like everything about it but the taste, while good and multifaceted, leaves something to be desired. Maybe better fresher.

Can really taste the Schwartz. Caramel malty German bread sorta.

Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of off-white that lingers. Lovely dark chocolate aromas with some light dark malt fruity notes - prune. Smooth on the palate with more dark chocolate and light coffee-like roastiness. Mild and balanced. Easy drinking. --- Beer merged from original tick of Winter Lager on 19 Jan 2019 at 00:23 - Score: 7
