Canadian Whisky Barrel-Aged Imperial Brown Ale

Born a double-mashed imperial brown ale, then matured for 18 months in freshly drained 10-year Canadian rye whisky barrels, the beer features checkered notes of rich vanilla, charred oak, warming whisky and spicy rye. With a lingering, boozy sweetness and round, resonant flavor, Plaid Habit clearly earns its name.

2018 vintage 12 oz bottle poured. Copper reddish brown pour. Bit of a snow globe of sediment after 7 years of cool and dark age. Active carb still, and a lasting head. Big maple nose, some bran, spicy .alts, and a touch of barrel. Really a smooth brew for its strength. Is it even a brown ale anymore at a hair short of 14%? Moderately dense body, spicy malts, bold toasty grain, bran, lingering dry whiskey and oak. Late maple like reminder. Definitely a layered BA brew, and something a lot different than your expected barrel offerings. Really stood the test of time too. Very nice.

Bottle from the LCBO. Pours a dark, hazy brown, with a sticky, off white head. Aroma is a punch of whiskey barrel right between the eyes. Huge amounts of sticky brown sugar, and caramels. some light pine resins, and slight nuttiness. Boozy, and cloying finish. Low bitterness and a huge amount of barrell and oak, that just dominates. This is a barrel bomb all the way. Too boozy and cloying for me. good for what it is, but not my bag.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is full of English-style bready malts, toasted caramel, spicy rye, whiskey barrels, and charred oak. Flavour is moderately-to-heavily sweet with plenty of complexity: there's lots of spicy rye, toasted caramel, bready malt, charred oak, a bit of cherry, and molasses. Lots of cherry and caramel on the finish, with plenty of sugars that I would dial down a bit. But, all in all, this is very nicely made.

Bottle: Poured a hazy dark brown color ale with a small brown foamy head with light retention and minor lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt notes with some vanilla notes, rye whiskey notes with some woody notes. Taste is also a nice mix of light chocolate and caramelized malt notes with some rye whiskey notes and some vanilla with a wody finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation with some warming alcohol notes. Nice barrel-aged brown ale with loads of character.
