From tap at Lya Beer Café, Prague, with OGJ 06.01.20. Translucent red. Some pink head. Fine and pure lambic aroma and taste of hibiscus, rosebuds and redcurrants. Acid and dry mouthfeel. Perhaps lacking a bit in complexity.

Tap at 100 piv. Assertively sour. Rather thin and also low carbonation. Light leathery tartness, assertive funk, barnyard, also assertive hibiscus. Refreshing, easy drinking. Great.

Lambic flavoured with roselle (a Hibiscus species), the result of a crowdsourcing initiative by Oud Beersel, in which everybody could make suggestions as to which special ingredient had to go into their next experimental lambic. Loose, pale pinkish-hued, open and completely dissolving head, hazy fuchsia-tinged vermillion red robe. Aroma of indeed strong hibiscus, a flowery and – much more so – rosehip tea-like odour, quite strong manure (E. coli, no doubt), raspberry vinegar, sourn apple, moldy grapefruit, wet wood. Sour onset, sour apples and grapes with a lime-like edge but nowhere too sharply acidic, very soft carb as expected, supple wheaty base under ongoing tartness and esteriness, but more so under a bitter herbal effect coming from the roselle, a bit tea-like in the end as expected, before the lambic mustiness and esteriness takes over again. Too bad for that off-putting manure odour which should not have occurred, otherwise an interesting take on the old lambic theme – but I will probably never be entirely convinced that hibiscus flowers in any form have a place in beer.

30/XI/19 - sample @ Day 2 of Billies Craft Beer Festival 2019, BB: n/a - (2019-2033) Thanks to all for sharing today’s beers!

Aroma: floral, nice and fruity, some berries, hibiscus, fruity, soft acidity. MF: soft carbon, medium body, oily texture. Taste: dry, bit metallic, not fruity at all. Aftertaste: dry, funky, metallic. Wow, this was not what I was expecting…
