Pours murky mahogany into an English pint. Off white head with little retention recedes to sicken surface. Vanilla and caramel aromas. Medium bodied with sweet caramel and chocolate upfront turning to earthy bitter hops in the lasting finish. Tastes better than it looks.

Slightly hazed amber colour with a soapy beige head that stays a little while, and lacing is dirty and nice. Floral nose over caramel malt base with some hints of dark fruits. The hops are nicely balanced in the flavours giving some smooth dryness with grassy notes. The caramel base is mild and not sweet, so goes down easily. Still, lots going on here and very complex for an ESB. Pretty hazy at last pour with fine particles. Quite good!

Bouteille 341 ml. Fond caramélisé sur notes granuleuses de céréales et de terre. Fruité aux légers accents de jujube et de fruits confits sont les composantes de cet olfactif léger. Rousse et très voilée, elle développe une mousse rocailleuse qui tient assez bien. Un tout léger fruité en entrée de bouche, se transforme rapidement en une amertume tranchante de houblons terreux, laissant une traînée astringente en fin de bouche. le caramel est très discret. Les tons gustatifs sont surtout concentrés sur des notes de terre humide, de branches mortes et de feuilles d'automne. Amertume très prenante. Ça rappelle le vieux pub Anglais. Une ESB tout à fait traditionnelle.

Soft chocolate peach aroma, hints of carrot cake. Kinda. Great look to it again in this brewpub, fine head and darker brown body with some fog. Flavour is muddy barley and fusel hints. Kind of a mixed bag, not the best offering from our esteemed Montreal institution but still very drinkable.

Bottle: Poured a clear dark brown color ale with a large light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry caramelized malt notes with some nice cereal notes also perceptible. Taste is dominated by dry caramelized malt with light leafy hops notes with some clean cereal notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Good drinkability with right amount of complexity for the style.

En cask sur place. Nez malté rappelant le caramel doux, de houblon floral doux (aux notes herbeuses et citriques) et fruité doux (agrumes) avec des notes légèrement terreuses et de noix. Rondeur moyenne en bouche et très peu pétillante. Goût moyennement amer de houblon floral et légèrement citrique (qui dure toute la gorgée) avec un léger goût d’agrumes sucrées lors de l’entrée en bouche suivi d’un goût malté de caramel doux auquel se développe un léger goût terreux jusqu’en finale, où l’on retrouve également un léger goût de houblon herbeux (rappelant un goût de thé). Arrière-goût moyen et légèrement sec, légèrement amer de houblon mi-floral mi-herbeux avec des notes d’agrumes. [notes 2006]

On tap at Dieu du Ciel, pours a hazy dark orange with a small beige head. Aroma is very restrained, featuring light English malts and hops. Flavour is more on the hoppy side, very English flavours with just enough biscuity malt to balance. Decent stuff.
