BATCH 20 (blended in July 2015) was distributed as follows:
Type in BATCH
Cognac 34%
Rum 33%
New Oak High Toast 33%
The Oak Aged Batch 20 is a very exclusive batch, available only at our Tasting Hall and Monastery Shop. It is ripened in rum and cognac casks as well as in new oak casks. The cognac casks are made from French Limousin oak: traditionally the casks for cognac. This striking combination gives the batch a very complex, rich, fine aroma and flavour. The typical almond and vanilla scent of rum and the prominent, floral, sweet scent of cognac significantly enhance the aroma of Quadrupel. A unique aspect is that this Oak Aged has rested in rum casks for 5 years, giving this batch an exceptionally lovely dark colour and creating a well-balanced beer.

Obviously aged sample Slightly paler cognac-noyac coloured beer, headless. Spirit - rum is faintly recognisable -, brandy. There is (indeed) toast traceable. Raisins, figs, old wine. Mild sweetness, more thanks to the alcohol than to anything else. Bit nutty, aged (lightly fortified) wine. Preserved fruit. Serious alcoholwarming, light -burn; quite slick, oily feel, bit viscous. Quite good but paling a tad compared to the #19.

375ml bottle, drunk on my birthday. Thanks JefVerstraete for this. Pours a deep brown, small off-white head. Aroma has vanilla, oak, cognac, fruits, malt grain. Palate is oily, smooth, very low carbonation remaining. Aged rich caramel seems to have taken dominance over the years, marrying well with the cognac, though some pleasant vanilla, oak & rum remains, alongside some fruity port notes. Much prefer fresh oak-aged, but this has its moments.

Corked bottle. dark amber color. Alcohol, rhum, vanilla and a hint of cognac in the aroma. The rhum is dominating. Malty sweet thinnish alcoholic flavor with loads of rhum, pear and vanilla. Hints of oak and cognac. Bubblegum. Candied fruit. Complex and tasty.

Dark brown with quick fading head. Aroma starts with lots of cognac sweetness. Later more caramel and vanilla. It remains pleasantly boozy. Fairly rich too.

Bottle @ home. Dark chestnut brown colour, thin layer of beige creamy foam. Sweet nose of plums, dried fruit, oak, vanilla, bourbon, cognac. Light vinous. Again a very nice Oak Aged version but not the best.

Hazy deep amber brown beer, small cream colour head. Palate is light and smooth, reasonable fine carbonation. Smooth soft malts, light creamy sweetness. Very smooth and pleasing cognac brandy. Light fruity citric peel underneath. Trace of vanilla. Smooth light finish. Comes together extremely well, light and easy drinking but plenty of barrel character. La Trappe OA continues to fascinate.

Bottle at home, 29th July 17. Pours dark Amber. Aroma is rich fruit, caramel, barrel and booze. Taste is complex, sweet, very smooth, easy drinking, I get the cognac and Iām for sure, woody notes. I served this slightly too cold, probably, and the beer improved as it warmed. Excellent, but I have had better in the series.

375 ml bottle. Cork went flying... Pours a red mahogany with moderate persistent head. Aromas of mild oak, sweet malts, toffee and sugary raisins. Flavors follow same, mild oakiness and slightly sweet but perfectly balanced. Warm finish. A sipping beer on par with a big brandy or drambuie. Presented perfectly at the Kulminator. Extra point!
