Blended aged Lambics from Belgium by Don Feinberg of Vanberg & DeWulf. Producded from 2011 to 2015.
Lambics are truly the “wines” of the beer world. With wine one speaks of “gout de Terroir” because the land so influences a wine’s flavor. With Lambics, one must speak of “gout de Tonneau SM“ because each cask (tonneau) produces a lambic that matures and tastes different. Blending these Tonneau is such an art that there exist independent Geuzestekkerij (blenders) who buy young Lambic then age and bottle it under their own name.
Lambickx™ is Vanberg & Famille’s brand of hand-selected and blended lambics. Every Lambic with the Lambickx™ name is made from casks personally tasted and chosen by Don Feinberg, one of the first importers of Belgian beer to America and founder of the first Belgian-only brewery in the U.S. Don chooses his Lambics for their complexity, brilliance and drinking excellence both by themselves and as exquisite accompaniments to food.
Barrel Type: 275- & 600-liter French Oak

375mL bottled in 2015, drunk 9/16/16.
Bright, golden-bronze body is topped by a medium-sized, white head showing moderate retention for the style. Good clarity, sediment left behind.
The primary notes I get from De Troch are cork, leather, strong mineral, very light must/wool blanket and a hint of cheese. There’s some fruitiness there, as well, though it’s not intensely full of green apple, like Boon. So it smells ok to me, but it’s just such a far cry from the bright, fruity, band-aid-laden brett of 3F and controlled, yet intricate funky brightness of Cantillon, to name the best. I suppose it has its merits, but it’s not my cup of tea. There is some light malt/wheat character in there, as well, adding light honey/caramel. A touch of powdered sugar/vegetal character but not too heavy/problematic. No alcohol noted.
I find it fares worse in the mouth, with more sweetness (not artificial, though there is some very light saccharine) than I’d care for. Rather simplistic, with cork and mustiness not matching up to the great lambic houses very well, in my opinion. Kind of vegetal/sugary on the finish, with very light oak suggestions and lots of fruitiness. Carbonation is fairly engaging, natural, at least. Ehhhh....it’s ok....
