Notes from March 2011 Someone told me these guys were in town now. Where's my 30 tap Breckenridge takeover party?! :D Smudgy, squished pink coding on the neck that I'm not about to squint to try & read. Ommegang anniversary stemware. Solid pour straight down the middle results in an inch of russet-colored lathery head. Black & brown body, with ruby highlights. Even, wavy lace. Smell is doughy with baking chocolate mainly. Lightly coated with sugar & lactose. Just a touch of coffee & tar. Mild coffee & carob upfront. Some light bitter-sharp char. Hinting at that oatmeal, with a kind of interesting husky character. Gentle lactose sweetness. Mid-range, lingering leafy green bitterness. Body is very thin, but fluffy. Oatmeal doesn't add noticeable feel. Carbonation is too strong for me. Balances out somehow. A decent six-packer.

Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of dark toasted malt. Taste has dry and bitter malt. Palate has hop bite on the nose, bitter mocha. Interesting.

Bottle from Village Beer Merchant. Brown coloured. Roasted malts, coffee, coffee grinds, quite dry. No oats whatsoever. Pretty poor all around.

From old tasting notes. Translucent brownish black color. Bubbly tan head. Nutty roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate and licorice. Sweetish chocolate malt flavor has hints of peanut, oatmeal and burnt caramel. Smooth yet chewy. A flavorful stout.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Greg & Jane’s Beer and Wine. Appearance is dark brown/mahogany with no head, no sparkle and no lacing. Aroma is moderately strong roasted malts, light dark fruit, vanilla, chocolate. Taste is mix of sweet dark fruit/chocolate and milder vanilla with bitter roast. Palate is medium bodied with creamy texture, lively (almost fizzy) carbonation and dry, mostly bitter roasty finish. Overall, all the attributes of a stout are here but everything is executed at a pretty average level. Too carbonated.

12 oz. bottle, from the bottle. Thanks Steve! Big nose of roasted coffee, chalk, and bread. Sweet and overly roasty, with a harsh bitterness. Medium body, creamy, biting, and pleasantly aggressive. This is a mellow and reasonably tasty stout, but a little too roasted and bitter.

Bottle. A- Malty, roasty, coffee, burnt sugar. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Malty, roasty, coffee, chocolate. P- Full body, thin texture, average carbonation, roasty finish. O- How is this less alcohol than the average macro lager. Quite a ton of flavor for such a light beer. Roasty smell and taste. Not real complex or deep but it does well for what it is. Really not complaints.
This is how an Oatmeal Stout should taste.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a fairly decent dark brown close to black color with a fair one finger off white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. Light lacing sticks in a speckled sort of way.
The smell had a light roast to coffee to slight sweet cocoa.
The taste was somewhat bitter and carried the roastiness into it and the slight sweetness. The oatmeal comes out here in the taste as it warms but is fairly subdued. Lingering roasty aftertaste.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionable quality about it.
Overall, for the most part, this was a pretty good oatmeal stout that I could have again.
