Pile O’Dirt Porter falls into the robust porter category. Characteristics of this beer style are a dark (almost black) color with a creamy tan head. The aroma is of sweet malt with a hint of roastiness reminiscent of cocoa. There are notes of chocolate and coffee in the flavor balanced with malt and caramel sweetness. This is a medium-bodied beer with moderate hop bitterness and negligible hop aroma and flavor. Pile O’Dirt Porter is brewed with the finest quality pale ale malt with Munich, Extra Special, Blackprinz and Chocolate malts added for color and flavor adjustment. Perle and Willamette hops are added to balance the sweet maltiness of this porter. Original Gravity is 15.2°P and alcohol by volume value is 6.0%.

Reviewed from notes. Received in trade.
The appearance had a dark brown to almost black color, one and a half finger white foamy head that dies within less than a minute; some lacing, but not too much.
The smell had a roasty sort of coffee to chocolate coming through in a combined sort of way.
The taste was a nice bitter roasty coffee taste with a decent chocolate-ness coming through. There is a slight bitter roasty coffee aftertaste with a quick dry coffee-ish finish.
On the palate, it sat at/about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionable aspect to it. Carbonation is good for the style and for me as there’s enough bitterness invading the mouth and tongue but not too much to lead one astray from the style.
Overall, I say this is a good American Porter well worthy of having again and also has a decent sessionability to have with its respected food.

35,5cl can (6%) shared by Cunningham - thanks! Pours deep mahogany with a small off-white head. Malty and caramelly aroma with chocolate and hints of dark fruits. Sweet and malty with a slightly bitter finish. Medium body, decent enough but nothing special. (2014-02-14 - at Cunningham’s place before RBNG-14)

355ml, 6 % abv, can shared. Shiny rustic brown coloured body. Beige layer at the surface. Mild roasted dark malts on the nose. Blended malty flavours of chocolate, caramel and liquorice offset by a moderate roasted bitter end. Medium bodied. Fair enough for a porter (at Cunninghams, Halden 14.02.2014)

Can, shared by Cunningham. It’s a clear reddish brown beer with a small light beige head. Roasted light alcoholic nose with coffee and a touch of dark bread. A bit alcoholic in the mouth, medium bodied and soft on the carbonation. Laying roasted finish with a certain warmth. Pleasant, but not very interesting. 140214

12oz can thanks to Jake65. Ticks off my last remaining State. Pours a watery but opaque black with some sticky, beige head. Nose is very nice, chocolate, vanilla, mild toast, malt, molasses, dark brown sugar, earthy, some iced mocha. Flavor is very similar, lots of solid flavor, vanilla, chocolate, molasses, dark brown sugar, earthy, a little bit of umami, some toast, a little coffee ground. Clean, dry finish. Very nice. My can said 6%, very drinkable.

Tasting at Bruce’s Pad. South Dakota tick! Thanks Ryan! Murky dark brown beer with a tidy pale tan head. Palate is light and crispy. Light and sweet dark malts with a little not so sweet chocolate. A little ripe orange. Light dry finish. Not bad.
