Hard to believe I've never had this classic. Very good old style stout.

0.355 l bottle from 'Beer Republic', bottled in May 2022. Pitch black with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, brown head. Sweetish-malty, gently roasty aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, roasted hazelnut and some licorice. Fairly sweet, malty, rather roasty taste of hard roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, lots of licorice, ash, roasted hazelnut, some vanilla and hints of bourbon, followed by a long, rather roasty-bitter, ashy, slightly woody finish. Full body, very smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Rich and intense Impy, sweet but also fairly roasty, great mouthfeel. Lacks complexity though, the barrel is hardly noticeable. A bit underwhelming to be honest, maybe already too old.

October 2010: Bottled, as Deschutes The Abyss Reserve 2009, kindly shared by gunnar. Pitch black colour, excellent brown head. Lovely and complex aroma of dark malts, chocolate, coffee, tobacco, liquorice and leather, also some oaky and vinous notes. The flavour has notes of heavily roasted malts, balanced by a suitable sweetness, coffee and liquorice, hints of sandalwood. Superb!

12 ounce bottle. Purchased on 02/04/2022 at Spirits Unlimited in Point Pleasant, NJ. Packaged on 04/28/2021. Jet black pour. Frothy tan head settles finger high. Nice lacing. Impressive roasted malt aroma has notes of bittersweet dark chocolate, licorice and molasses. First sip brings rich dark chocolatey notes, along with velvety espresso and sticky, sulphury molasses. Hints of oak and bourbon linger on the palate. A very delicious and elegant Imperial Stout. I will look for more of this to cellar and enjoy again.
