Hoppin' Frog brewmaster Fred Karm has won multiple awards for his chilli cooking, and the Hoppin’ Frog Tasting Room has been voted one of the best in the US for its food, so we decided to collaborate on a chilli beer with a chilli con carne cook-off while we brewed it! Caramel sweetness from the malt balances the smoky heat in this one-off celebration of the glorious chilli pepper.

9th Nov 2016: 330ml bottle between four at the monthly Shrewsbury beer exchange group meeting in Chez Sophie. Cheers, who ever for this offering. Red hue to the mid-brown body, wispy off-white topping. Peppery and slightly smoked chilli beer, not as stupidly hop as some I have come across, this had a pleasant manageable hotness which I found to my liking.

Tap at Shelton Brothers. Smoked paprika, floral pepper and caramel notes. A bit of cocoa as it warms. Decent but doesn’t really go anywhere, not really spicy, but peppery and smokey.

Keg @ The Cellar, Chester [060916]
Ruby, thin white head
Aroma of light red fruits, hint of chilli, spicy
Taste of red fruity malts, big chilli pepper, spicy as f*ck, lots of sweet caramel
Palate - Medium body, soft carb, sweet, lots of chilli heat. Finish is hot, no alcohol - probably hidden by the heat
Overall - Hot hot, gets boring after a while though, decent flavour under the heat
