Hoppin' Frog brewmaster Fred Karm has won multiple awards for his chilli cooking, and the Hoppin’ Frog Tasting Room has been voted one of the best in the US for its food, so we decided to collaborate on a chilli beer with a chilli con carne cook-off while we brewed it! Caramel sweetness from the malt balances the smoky heat in this one-off celebration of the glorious chilli pepper.

Tap at CBC Clerkenwell. Cloudy, reddish, dark brown colour with small, frothy, half-way lastng, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Almost vinous, fruity aroma with notes of dark berries, blue grapes, some herbal spiciness. Taste is slightly vinous, fruity and peppery spicy, notes of dark berries, hints of blue grapes, notes of chili, therefore accumulating spiciness, a minimally smoky chipotle touch. Quite OK.

Bottle. Cotteridge. Clear, dark ruby red. Barely a head. Nose has sweet paprika powder. Maybe some dark berry. Hard to pick much out beyond the smoky chilli. Taste is light sweet. Mouthfeel is smooth, with a fair chilli burn. Smoky sweet, chilli finish. Ok for the first half of the bottle, but I’m a bit of a spice wimp.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB 280717, at Bar Molotow, 20160903) The beer poured deep reddish brown and cloudy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had caramel and molasses. Palate was medium bodied and burning with medium carbonation. Flavours were caramel, sweetness, bell peppers, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste had the burning from chilli and bitterness. A pleasant chilli flavoured brew.
