Hoppin' Frog brewmaster Fred Karm has won multiple awards for his chilli cooking, and the Hoppin’ Frog Tasting Room has been voted one of the best in the US for its food, so we decided to collaborate on a chilli beer with a chilli con carne cook-off while we brewed it! Caramel sweetness from the malt balances the smoky heat in this one-off celebration of the glorious chilli pepper.

Keg at Casc. It pours darkest brown with a decent beige head. The aroma is sweet - spicy, caramel, toffee, dried fruits, green veg and warming chilli spice. The taste is sweet - spicy, red chilli spice, wood, leather, toasted action and earth with a dry, spicy finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Not so bad.

Keg at the Euston Tap, 23/08/16. Reddish amber with a well appointed beige cap. Nose is light spice, fruit loaf, treacle toffee, red pepper, earthy, light ashtray notes. Taste comprises a red chilli kick, biscuit, earthy fruit rinds, straw, brown bread. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a chilli bite. A well executed beer for the style but nothing I’d revisit.

i> Bottle from Beer Gonzo webshop , consumed in a field at Fairports Annual Reunion Festival, Cropredy Saturday 13th August 2016 Pours reddy brown with a light beige head. The chilli is notable from the off though it doesn’t ruin what is a good beer, in fact the strident hoppiness, nice malty base and chilli combine very well. It’s a really pleasant beer with a good chilli hit. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov15 3.7
