Liefmans Goudenband is one of the most distinctive dark beers in the world. Originally called IJzerenband (Iron Band) – a reference to the iron bands around the beer barrels – the bottle gained its champagne cork when it was renamed Liefmans Goudenband (Gold Band). Made in open vats with beer of mixed fermentation, it is left to mature for four to 12 months in the cellar. Mature beer is then fortified with younger beer, so the fermentation process starts up again.

33cl bottle (2015) from Rimi, Tallinn. Pours clear, dark mahogany coloured with a modest off-white to beige head. Aroma of dried fruits, wood and balsamic vinegar. Sweet, fruity and rather vinous with refreshing acidity that balanced the sweetness. Complex and very enjoyable.

75cl bottle. Pours hazy dark red/brown with a small, foamy, tan head that disappears and leaves some lacing. The aroma contains apples, sour cherries, malt, wood, wine, some vinegar and caramel. It tastes medium sweet and medium to light sour, with a light ’woody’ bitter touch. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Almost no hint of 8% ABV. Indeed, complex in aroma and flavour, yet subdued.

From old tasting notes. 1988 vintage. Deep mahogany brown color with a rocky tan head. Small champagne-like bubbles. Complex bouquet reminiscent of sultanas, cloves and molasses. Palate is zesty malt with a tart, dry finish. Long citrusy aftertaste. As Belgian brown ales go, this is a true classic.
