AB:09 is a 17.1%, Cranachan Imperial Stout, brewed in September 2011, and has been peacefully maturing in our amazing single grain whisky barrels since.

The Cranachan Imperial Stout was inspired by the famous Scottish desert, and was brewed with a mountain of dark malts, loads of oats, Scottish heather honey and local raspberries. The beer was then transferred to oak casks to mature for 6 months.

375 ml bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours pitch black with a small mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and slightly fruity with roasted malts, raisins, honey, whisky, red berries, alcohol, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate and sweet liquorice candy. Taste is sweet and slightly bitter with roasted malts, sweet liquorice candy, raisins, soy sauce, raspberries, honey, whisky, vanilla fudge, dark chocolate, sweetened dark roast coffee and toffee. Mouthfeel is round, boozy and near full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with roasted malts, sweet liquorice candy, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, burnt raisins, raspberries, honey and whisky. I must confess I expected less.

375mL bottle at Brewdog Birmingham, pours black with a small ring of tan head and an amber tinge. Aroma is very pungent, with notes of whiskey, oak chips, some raspberries in the back, and a touch of roasted malt. Flavour brings out a liqueur-ish body, with notes of sweet liqueur, honey, moderate oak chips, alcohol and some mildly sweet cocoa. Very liqueur-ish palate, with a high sweetness, though not cloying in any way. Medium complexity - missing a little something to push it into excellent territory that so far only the Abstrakt AB:04 has achieved in the series. Nevertheless, great stuff.

500 ml bottle @ Christianssand Brygghus. Dark brown, almost black in body with a thin brown head. Light in carbonation. Very nice aroma of smooth dark malt, dry fruit, red berries, molasses, leather, pleasant oak and sweet cherries. Flavor is sweet, strong and smooth dark malt, dry fruit, red berries and warming alcohol similar to port wine. This one has surprisingly much fruit and berries instead of whisky barrel as expected and the alcohol is smooth and dangerous. Fine body with a long and pleasant aftertaste. Great beer.

Bottle, at Christianssands Brygghus. An oily, black beer with a small, tan head. The aroma has lots of molasses, dark chocolate and coffee. Some dark sugars. Nice bitterness in the flavor.com along with all the dark flavors found in the aroma. Full body, sweetish and soft. Lasting finish. A nice one indeed, although way too warming. 130323

Re-rate as it’s almost the holidays! Still flat. Port-like aromas, more oak, little raspberry left. Gone quite thin and much more like a port wine. Pours black with no real head. Smells strongly of booze, the raspberry smell having gone when compared to a fresher bottle I?d tried. Really boozy, hurt my eyes when drinking. Good long finish, but a very mellow stout.

Bottle (#2606 of 5754) from BrewDog online. It pours black with a quickly dissipating tan head. The nose is roasted malt, salted caramel, coffee, oak, whisky, smoked peat, earth, tamarind, liquorice, raisin, plum and chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, rich coffee, spice, strong whisky, iodine, alcohol warmth, bitter chocolate, rubber, tar, oak, earth, tangy raspberry, balsamic vinegar and some astringency with a dry, warming finish. Full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Intense flavour! There’s certainly a lot going on, but it just doesn’t meld together well. A challenging beer!
