Bacchus Flemish Old Brown surprises with a taste reminiscent of wine and offers a beautiful balance between sweet and sour. This beer impresses through both its sourness and the slight touch of caramel brought by the roasted malt. However, its sourness is less pronounced than the sourness of other Flemish red-brown beers. Therefore, Bacchus Flemish Old Brown is a very refreshing beer with a pleasant aftertaste. A beer full of character and history!

Sunday night late night brew. Pours murky red brown. Tastes of cherry, plums, oak wood, bread, wine grapes. Refreshing tartness.

375 ml bottle via Beer Planet. Pours reddish brown with light head. Aromas of dark malt and wood. Only slightly sour to taste, with the malty notes of a Donker and a bit of light red fruit flavors. Crisp and refreshing when chilled.

Paper-wrapped green bottle from the LCBO. Pours a copper colour with ruby highlights. Its head is beige, creamy, big, long-lasting and the lacing it leaves behind is pretty thick. Mild balsamic vinegar scent with notes of fruits (cherries, apples) and sweet butterscotch in the background (after breathing a while). Tons of tiny-tiny bubbles float to the top, making it very carbonated. Wet mouthfeel and medium-thin bodied. The taste is pretty light, almost watered-down. Slight sourness at first, but dissipates quickly into a very calm cherry/apple finish. A small amount of wood comes out in the aftertaste. Looks good, smells good, but does not deliver in other departments. A decent introduction to Old Browns for those who have never tasted them.

Fra fat på Café Babbelar i Aalst 30 Apr 11. Dyp rød - nesten sort. Lavt skum. Syrlig metallisk aroma. Smaken også syrlig men med et fruktig preg. Søt fruktig ettersmak. OK til ost.

37,5cl bottle, bbe 01.2012. Poured murky brown/reddish with a thin head. Aroma has cherries and woody notes, slightly sour. Flavor is more sweet than sour, cherries and caramel. Sweet fruity finish. Hoped for more sourness. Quite boring brew.

First time I tasted this I had just started with trying special beers. Back then it almost made me throw up, I just couldn’t stand that sour taste! Naturally I re-rated it, I think about six months ago. Totally different story! It still isn’t and never will be my favorite beer, but it’s decent and it has a fantastic dark brown color with a deep dark red glow coming through. Carbo and body are a little low though. But decent.

bottle thanks to Danny, pours iced tea color with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is apple skins, light funk, wet wood. Flavor is thin but nice, mellow sour apple, leather, earthy wood in the finish.

Bottle from Nelson Wines. It pours hazy dark purple, with a thin foamy beige and low to moderate carbonation. The nose is malt vinegar, blackberry, blueberry, sweet strawberry, Wheatabix. The taste is blueberry, blackberry, sour cherry, sour green apple, red grape and a little pickled beetroot. It is initially quite sour and smoothes out to a juicy berry finish. Tasty and refreshing, with some good underlying sourness.

Draught at Den Babbelaar in Aalst. Nice, deep ruby body, bright shiny surface. Smell of farmyard, mild acid fruits. Tart berries and fruit in flavour, dry oaky impression to the taste buds. Palate cleansing and quite alright with our cheese plate (Aalst, 30.04.2011).
