Bacchus Flemish Old Brown surprises with a taste reminiscent of wine and offers a beautiful balance between sweet and sour. This beer impresses through both its sourness and the slight touch of caramel brought by the roasted malt. However, its sourness is less pronounced than the sourness of other Flemish red-brown beers. Therefore, Bacchus Flemish Old Brown is a very refreshing beer with a pleasant aftertaste. A beer full of character and history!

25 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden deep amber with a lacing tan head. Aroma is citric and fruity, mild yeasty too. Flavour starts mild sweet and fruity. Light wooden note to a dry caramel malt base. Somewhat watery finish.

Bottle @ Maria tasting. Brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, dried fruits, malt. Flavour is sweet, dried fruits, caramel, yeast. Medium body. OK beer.

Bottle, courtesy of fonefan. It pours a clear, copper body with a beige head. Grapes, some malt, general fruityness and a touch of barnyard in the aroma. Quite fruity-sour in the mouth, with grapes, some apples, sugary sweetness and faint notes of vinegar and barnyard. Medium, quite fizzy mouthfeel, and a finish with sourness and some malt. An interesting beer, drinkable and quite complex. (080412)

06/06 0.25 l bottle @ Hopdevil, Zagreb, was retired beer, now again produced with different label. Poured dark reddish brown body with small head. Sourish vinegar aroma, enriched with some cherries and wood. Nice. Flavor not any worser, full relatively complex with fruity components (plums, cherries, berries, fermented grapes), wood, but also caramel and even a bit of chocolate hidden behind it all. Nice long finish, bit mouth pickering but sweetish as well, following the flavor. This is probably the best sour ale I’ve tried. Maybe the recipe changed as well?

Draft. Mahogony beer with a light off-white head. Slight acidic, light cherry aroma. Cherry, acetic flavor with light malt and a bit of oak. Medium body. Lingering cherry and acetic sourness. Nice.

Bottled. Deep ambery red colour with mediumsized beige head. Aroma is sour fruits and wood along with some mild notes of earth and vanilla. Flavour is acidic fruits along with wood, some caramel and red berries. Aftertaste gets rather sweet, even though the sourness does show it’s signs also here. Very smooth to drink, and not one of the really sour & acidic ones.

Bottle. Unclear light to medium amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, light acidic, red wine, wood. Flavor is moderate sweet, light acidic and sour with a average duration. (Very mild and refreshing). Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. (101207)
